Hello, my name is Educate Redneck, and I noticed you added an entry in the "Popular Culture" section of Antigonish (poem). In order to keep articles from becoming bloated by mentions, the guideline in MOS:POPCULT details the requirements for something to be mentioned. In short, it has to be discussed in some detail by a reliable, secondary source independent of the subject.
I also noticed you marked the edit as minor when it was not; on Wikipedia, WP:Minor edits have a specific meaning, namely that they in no way change the meaning on the article. Things like typo corrections, spacing and formatting and the like are typically minor, but anything where new content is added (or existing content is removed) is not a minor edit.
Finally, I notice above that your username is a reference to the Magnus Archives. What is your relationship with the Magnus Archive? I can help you set up any required declarations (if any) based on your answer, in order to ensure a smooth editing experience. :) EducatedRedneck (talk) 19:23, 27 December 2025 (UTC)
- Hi, thanks for mentioning it, quite new to Wikipedia and happy to learn.
- A - Requirements for mentioning - The only other major source for the Magnus Archives is the unofficial wiki. This has been explicitly stated by the creators to be entirely independent of them in a Q&A session (will be more than happy to find which one if needed). The wiki itself may of course be biased towards the show as it is fan-made, but my personal experience of it has been that it is accurate.
- B - Edit marking - Thanks a ton for noticing my mistake, I've only read the basic entry booklets to start and have been going through some of the more detailed guides in my free time. I believe that I have marked a few edits wrongly then, so thanks again for informing me early. I cannot find a way to change what I have marked the edit as after publishing, if there is one please inform me of it.
- C - Username - I have no affiliation with The Magnus Archives or Rusty Quill, other than the fact that I am a fan of the show. I understand now how my username may be misleading, and I will add a clarification in my talk page
- Thanks for the help :) Jonathan Sims, The Archivist (talk) 19:44, 27 December 2025 (UTC)
- Hi!
- A) Yeah, Wikipedia's guidelines for sourcing is a bit labyrinthine sometimes. The wiki probably won't work either, as it falls afoul of WP:UGC. Basically, because we don't know who's contributing, we can't rely on it. This particular mention might not have enough sourcing for inclusion at the time. Which for me can be frustrating when I know the reference is there; it took me a while to start thinking of Wikipedia less as "a collection of things that are true" and more as "a collection of things that other reliable things say is important".
- B) No worries at all; Wikipedia has a steep learning curve, and I glanced through your contributions and you're doing quite well, I think! Keep up the great work!
- C) I figured that was the case, but thought I'd check in case I was wrong. WP:COI talks about the 2-4 steps someone would have to go through if they were affiliated in order to edit the topic, but you having no affiliation means you don't have to do any of that at all; just keep editing and learning like you have been!
- Welcome again to Wikipedia, and thanks for the quick and detailed response! EducatedRedneck (talk) 20:08, 27 December 2025 (UTC)
- Hi, thanks for the reply
- I do find it really annoying about the sourcing issue, but it makes sense and its probably the best way to do things. Ill go ahead and delete the edit, and make a note to get a proper citation before publishing.
- Thanks for all your help ! Jonathan Sims, The Archivist (talk) 20:15, 27 December 2025 (UTC)
