20 January is the 100th birthday of David Tudor (see my story) and the 300th birthday of Bach's cantata Meine Seufzer, meine Tränen, BWV 13, if we go by date instead of occasion as he would have thought, so see my story for last Sunday, and celebrate ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:45, 20 January 2026 (UTC)

David Tudor...such a brilliant composer and performer. Thankful for all your good work Gerda. Netherzone (talk) 21:06, 20 January 2026 (UTC)

Artnet

Hey Netherzone, hope all's well! Was hoping to get your assistance on a COI issue.

I've been trying to clean up some of the articles for perennial art sources (ARTnews, AiA, etc.), and I recently expanded the article for Artnet. It had been languishing after a high-profile incident involving one of its employees editing the Artnet article along with his wife's and his own (I imagine you already know about that whole, erm, situation). I got some free trials for German newspapers that covered the company's early and corporate history more in-depth and spent a bit of time on it, though there's certainly more that could be done there.

Anyway, the founder of the company, who left the firm more than 30 years ago, popped up trying to edit/adjust the early history (Special:Diff/1335063214). I gave him a COI template warning and pointed him toward the FAQ for subjects, but he's just re-stating his same concerns. I can feel my patience wearing thin very quickly and I do not want to bite this guy (nor do I want to discount the factual errors he's claiming, though they seem a bit hazy). As the one who expanded the article I also feel a little too "involved" to guide him through all the COI rules. Any advice on what to do here/where to ask for someone else to step in?

Thanks! 19h00s (talk) 00:37, 28 January 2026 (UTC)

Hi @19h00s, I added them as a connected contributor to the talk page template. You were right to revert their edit that contained unsourced content, formatting errors, and original research. I was not previously aware of the situation. It seems like the recent editor is no longer editing the article, but if additional issues arise, don't hesitate to reach out again (here or by email) if there are other problems with the article that you think needs an extra pair of eyes. File:Alan Scarritt in 2011.png

Hi Netherzone. Could you check the date of death you entered in the non-free use rationale of File:Alan Scarritt in 2011.png? I think you made either a typo or a copy-paste error. In addition, there's no source for Alan Scarritt's date of death currently cited in the article. Could you add whatever source you found when looking for images of Scarritt to the article? -- Marchjuly (talk) 04:54, 29 January 2026 (UTC)

Hello and thanks of the heads up. The date of death is in the source for the file itself (in the Source (WP:NFCC#4) field, it is his obituary: https://www.scarrittstudios.com/alan-scarritt-obituary .
The source is also in the article (in the Early life section to confirm his birth date) but I forgot to also place the source next to the death date in the infobox. Please let me know if any other changes are necessary, and thanks again for your keen eye! Netherzone (talk) 06:46, 29 January 2026 (UTC)

DYK for Allan Ludwig

On 2 February 2026, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Allan Ludwig, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Allan Ludwig is known as a "Founding Father" of gravestone studies? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Allan Ludwig. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Allan Ludwig), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to nominate it.

Today something new: a 100th birthday of someone alive, György Kurtág! In 2004 I was there when he and his wife played for the Rheingau Musik Festival where he was the featured composer. They played as the 2019 DYK said, on an upright piano, - listen, the last piece was the same. - More pics uploaded, enjoy. And Rosiestep shows the latest cat! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:03, 19 February 2026 (UTC)

Thanks Garda, I'll give it a listen, and also look at your new pics which is always a pleasure. Netherzone (talk) 23:05, 19 February 2026 (UTC)
P.S. I added the image of the salt ponds in Salinas, Fuencaliente to the salt article, but was not sure if Salinas was the name of the town, or if the salt ponds there are simply referred to as Salinas. Netherzone (talk) 23:16, 19 February 2026 (UTC)
Thank you! Town is Fuencaliente, but its right next to the Fuencaliente Lighthouse. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:33, 19 February 2026 (UTC)
My story today is again about Percy Grainger (FA by Brian Boulton), this time with a video that surprised me. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:40, 20 February 2026 (UTC)
Three good things today: 1) story about a woman, 2) from a GA by SusunW, 3) I began the first of two planned compositions by women composers, Quatre instants. The other will come later in Feb as meant for Easter. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:51, 21 February 2026 (UTC)
Today's main page features four biographies I helped to bring there, two women and two men, three opera singers (one pictured) and an actor, - a record for me, I believe ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:41, 24 February 2026 (UTC)

Anna Best

Hi Netherzone, Hope life is treating you well. I am sorry I didn't ping you before I posted the source assessment for Anna Best. We always amicable disagree in the rare instances when we do. I realize it is tricky showing notability for a conceptual artist but in this case I didn't see it. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 17:56, 8 February 2026 (UTC)

Hi there, @WomenArtistUpdates, I started to write a reply to your source analysis table, but got distracted by things in "real life". I do think she's notable when we look at both her curatorial projects (she's done a lot for other artists) as well as her own work. I'm guessing that there's a lot more press out there that's offline due to the time period when she was most active. But I haven't had the time to do a deeper dive into newspaper and magazine archives and such. I also meant to look deeper into her archives on her website to see what can be found there. I think that scanned articles and other relevant content that may appear in her archives should be counted/considered even tho they're on her website not another server, mainly because I think there's zero percent chance that these would be "forged" or PR fluff in her case. I think she's a serious artist who fell thru the cracks of history like so many women artists who don't fit neatly into disciplinary pigeon holes. Whether or not the article is saved is up to the community. And of course I trust your judgment and our agreement to cordially disagree on things!
BTW, I can't get the Source Assessment Table tool to work for me this past couple weeks, it just opens up a blank window. (The NCORP tool is working tho). Did you build the table by hand, or is the SA tool working for you? Netherzone (talk) 19:27, 8 February 2026 (UTC)
The Source Assessment Table tool is working fine for me. hmmm. --WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 00:01, 10 February 2026 (UTC)
@WomenArtistUpdates, thanks for tagging the SPA at the AfD. I noticed that that editor only has edited on or about her, and Nick Berkeley who is her partner. They removed the maintenance tags on NB's article which was a red flag. So it seems clear COI. I'm pretty sure he's not notable based on the current sourcing (consisting of a dead blog, a link to one of his videos on Vimeo, two more dead links, AB's website, and a motorcycle blog link that does not mention him. A BEFORE did not reveal anything of use. I think I will take it to AfD. Netherzone (talk) 15:25, 14 February 2026 (UTC)
I'll be keeping an eye out for that one. Did you get the Source Assessment Table tool to work for you? --WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 17:54, 14 February 2026 (UTC)
Still not able to get the SAT tool to work on either Firefox or Safari. What browser are you using? Do you happen to remember if this the Javascript code that you installed User:DannyS712/SATG ? I will try updating my operating system, but I hesitate to do that because whenever I do it takes me weeks to get my printers and other peripherals to work properly, then have to update all the drivers, etc. Before I do that will ask at the Helpdesk. Netherzone (talk) 21:34, 14 February 2026 (UTC)
I use Firefox as a browser when editing Wikipedia. I am %99 sure I downloaded "SA table generator" script User:DannyS712/SATG.js using the directions here. I know what you mean about the cascade of issues caused by an update. I somehow managed to lose all my Chrome bookmarks with an update recently. --WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 01:26, 15 February 2026 (UTC)

Editing in noncontentious areas

Your last comment on Moroccanoil suggested that I limit my editing to noncontentious areas. I am familiar with articles in the general press saying that all Wikipedia pages relating to the Middle East war have been taken over by propagandists, and I have been careful to avoid those pages. This page is about a cosmetics company headquartered in New York. I had no idea that it was "contentious" until I responded to a COI request. I have run into three other pages that are similarly WP:OWN by activists of one sort or another. If Wikipedia is a propaganda site, then I am wasting my time here. Julian in LA (talk) 20:35, 8 February 2026 (UTC)

@Julian in LA I left the comment on your talk page, not on the Moroccanoil article. It was a suggestion about avoiding contentious areas, especially if you are going to vandalize them rather than interact productively (even when things are not going your way). I've also left some suggestions on how you can edit more productively when you get frustrated. I'm sorry to see you have been blocked, but am not surprised. Netherzone (talk) 21:15, 8 February 2026 (UTC)

NPOV/COI review

Would you have a look at Robert B. Silvers and share comments if you feel like commenting? The guy co-founded The New York Review of Books; and it cites tributes from his former colleagues, which I think is faux pas and also, I think there's COI situation going on similar to the Henderson situation. Graywalls (talk) 08:03, 9 February 2026 (UTC)

@Graywalls, there is excessive puffery and peacocking and I agree that the tributes and connected accolades are excessive. Also, the DetectPromo tool flags these: Promotional words: comprehensive, eminent, honored with, influential, leading, more than, outstanding, prestigious, prominent, striking. I'm sure he was much loved and respected as a great editor, and a great guy all around, but WP is not the place for expressing that exuberance - it does not conform to NPOV. I think the "Reputation" section is most in need of revision (BTW I've never seen a Reputation section in any article before). Netherzone (talk) 16:22, 14 February 2026 (UTC)

Re: Allan Ludwig

It just occurred to me: if LLMs weren't used, it's very possible the user did use it without ever knowing it. LLMs are integrated into many search functions, often quite seamlessly for unfamiliar users, so that might explain it. Viriditas (talk) 20:57, 15 February 2026 (UTC)

Yikes!
I hadn't thought about that, but I think you are right. Now that the AI Borg has taken over the world, every time I search on Google the very first hit is AI Overview with a "See More" button. I can understand why some people might think the items AI found are true and accurate. So the editor may not be using ChatGPT since AI is becoming automatically integrated into everything. All the best, from the Netherzone (looking out for the robot takeover, ha ha!) Netherzone (talk) 23:05, 15 February 2026 (UTC)
It's becoming a serious problem. It's now completely integrated in my browser, which is slightly frightening. Also, most browser extensions, such as Grammarly, apparently record your input for posterity. There's a feedback loop being created, where people write what they find on an LLM, only to have the LLM tell them what they wrote. Also, I've noticed some worrying trends with LLMs recently, where if you try to get involved in a political discussion about history, let's say for example about the role of the far right in Latvia, the LLM will go out of its way to neutralize the topic and provide a false balance so as to avoid upsetting anyone. Viriditas (talk) 23:13, 15 February 2026 (UTC)
It really is a huge problem - the flood gates have been opened and they are not going to close. So much misinformation and gobble-di-gook. I am not sure how well it can be managed and refined. I too worry about its entry into the political realms which we are seeing unfold in living color. And worry about warfare, and for the fate of future generations. As for Wikipedia, who knows? The impact already has been substantial. On a happier note, have a great rest of your day or night. Netherzone (talk) 00:12, 16 February 2026 (UTC)
