Hi SimLibrarian, I am looking to work with the Wikipedia community of editors to suggest objective edits to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) article to help address the style and tone issues highlighted for this article, as well as the issues noted around primary sources. I have a COI as AFSP is my client, so I will not be making edits directly. I was wondering if you would be willing to take a look at my suggested edits for this article, and if you agree, help with implementing the edits.

I have drafted a rework of the first lead section of the page to address the tone issues and added additional 3rd party sources. Please see the updates in more detail below. We are looking to provide updates for the majority of the page to answer the issues in full, but will break them up by section to allow for easier reviewing.

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is a voluntary health organization that advocates for research and education around suicide. Based in New York City, it is the largest private funder of suicide prevention research,^[1]having awarded more than $24 million in research grants.^[2] The stated goals of the foundation are to educate the public about mental health and suicide prevention, support survivors of suicide loss, fund scientific research, and advocate for public policies around mental health and suicide prevention.^[3] In addition to the national headquarters in New York City, the foundation also has a Public Policy office in Washington, D.C., as well as local chapters in all 50 states in the U.S., the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. ^[4]

Through its local chapters and volunteer network, AFSP provides local communities with support services for survivors of suicide loss^[5], educational programs for schools^[6], workplaces^[7] and other places in the community, and awareness and fundraising events such as the Out of the Darkness Walks.^[8]

The Public Policy office uses volunteer Field Advocates to support mental health and suicide prevention legislation and policies at the federal, state and local level.^[9]

Hi! Thank you for considering me. I'm sorry, but fully managing COI edits is well outside my area of experience. I can make a couple of suggestions to improve your proposed edits:

* The first sentence should describe the fundamentals of what the organization is as its first priority (in this case, a US-based non-profit organization), not what the organization does (advocacy mission).

* "Having awarded..." should specify at what time this number was true (e.g. "as of 2023".

* "Through its local chapters and volunteer network, AFSP provides local communities with support services..." is a level of wordiness that smells promotional. It's less likely to be flagged if shortened, e.g. "AFSP employees and volunteers provide support services..." -- This also avoids having "community" twice in one sentence.

If you aren't able to get the edits made soon, let me know and I may be able to find time to research COI edit procedures, as this is an important topic. SimLibrarian (talk) 05:38, 15 August 2023 (UTC)

Regarding your note that the section on the closure of the Guide needs to be improved, I have made a number of additions in reference to changes brought about due to WWII. I believe that your note is therefore no longer necessary. Albert Isaacs (talk) 01:39, 21 October 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for the improvements you made. It seems like there are still some sections that aren't encyclopedic in tone and are rather editorial without being referenced or quoting from a source (ex. "The arrangement of the timetables is even more higgledy-piggledy than before"; "the overwhelming impression is of a poor, cheaply produced publication"), but I don't know enough about the Guide to be sure how to change it appropriately. Thanks for your comments, but I do not resile from what I said earlier. If you get a chance to look at Bradshaw's you'll see that the negative comments that I made do stand up. Opinion-based descriptions like "higgledy-piggledy", unless referenced from another source (e.g. "described by John Smith as 'higgledy-piggledy' in his review"), are not appropriate language in an encyclopedia, no matter how higgledy-piggledy you or I believe the work to be. I suggest the Country Gazette album 'Live at McCabe's' isn't a real live recording. Listen to the audience. They're inaudible except between songs. Further, I detect 'wall of sound' studio shenanigans regarding the singing. There are many albums out there claiming to be live, but they aren't. I haven't been able to find any confirmation of my speculation, but that doesn't mean I'm wrong. Probably the best way to find out would be to ask Alan Munde himself - but one needs Wonder Woman's 'golden lasso of truth' to make sure he's honest - I suggest they did appear live at McCabe's, and maybe that concert was recorded, but the version on the CD has significant studio embellishments. I noticed your edits at CGS Sonadia and two others. You can always suppress the automatic DISPLAYTITLE by using |display title=none on {{infobox ship begin}}. As regards the reason why the automatic styling failed, my money is on "CGS" not being on the list of recognized ship prefixes. @Figbird I'm glad to help, thank you for wanting to contribute! It looks like Rudi Lemberg already has an article you've made an edit to, so adding him to the list of other Pugwashites should just involve adding a link to his article in the "Other Pugwashites" section in the article Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs. If you're used to using the Visual Editor, you'll need to use a little bit of markup language when you edit the template containing the list of Other Pugwashites. You'll see that each entry looks like this:

* [[Ana Maria Cetto]]

The asterisk makes the bullet point before the name in the list, and the double square brackets create a link to the article with that name.

Ideally, you'll want to add a source to Lemberg's article indicating his Pugwashite status.

And I have two sources for his Pugwash status that I plan to use as citations on the Wiki page for Rudi Lemberg;

I'm rusty on source editing and look forward to reskilling that I expect will be valuable here as I want to add some sub-headings, including a sub-bio for Hanne Lemberg, a fine artist.

@MMiller (WMF) Of course, I'm glad to help! The short answer is that editing short descriptions is quick and easy to do on mobile. I do a lot of my editing on my phone while lying in bed, or waiting for water to boil in the kitchen, etc. as a "productive" alternative to social media. In the Wikipedia app, it's easy to find articles that need a short description. Given how many people use mobile devices to access Wikipedia, I think short descriptions are a neglected area for article improvement and ensuring Wikipedia is as user-friendly as possible.

To edit them quickly, I've been going through articles alphabetically (by incrementing each letter in the search bar), since the search results show short descriptions. For most articles, I copy-paste some element from the first sentence of the article to the short description box and make adjustments to fit the character limit and other style rules. This takes under 30 seconds for the average article.

I don't have any thoughts on how to improve the short description editing experience itself in the iOS app, but improvements to the search feature would be helpful for the way I've been working down the alphabet. Any given search term only provides 24 results, so working down the list can require adding more and more guesswork letters to make sure I "get everything" for a certain start to a search term. (For example, my search bar right now is "Chiesa de", and I'll have to try "Chiesa dei", "Chiesa deg", and "Chiesa del" separately.)

On desktop, I think it's easy to miss short description editing since Shortdesc helper is an optional gadget. In Firefox on PC, it also fails to load in some circumstances -- off the top of my head, it usually doesn't show up after saving edits to a page from the visual editor.

Hi @Benfelidae ! Thanks for letting me know about the problem with this article. It's definitely scrambled up between the BAPP and SCPP, but I'm not familiar enough with either project to be sure which parts are accurate. It looks like the projects are fairly similar in intent and location. For example, footnote 2 cites Felidae Conservation Fund's site regarding the BAPP. Yes, in the first paragraph any thing that mentions BAPP should be replaced with Santa Cruz Puma Project. We are also no longer partnered with the project, so Felidae can be replaced with Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District. The citations involving The BAPP can probably be left (the information on mountain lions in the area is correct), but it could also be recited with info from the Santa Cruz Puma Project. Hi again @Benfelidae -- I'm trying to work out exactly what I should change; I can see how the article got snarled between the two. As far as I can tell, from the pages you linked, SCPP and BAPP are both done in coordination with UC Santa Cruz and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, both involve GPS collaring, and both are set in the Santa Cruz Mountains? I'm really sorry but I normally make small or clear edits to articles and I don't want to end up further snarling this situation while trying to fix it. For right now, I added a SCPP link to the page and fixed some broken archives. I'm going to create a Talk thread on the BAPP page to hopefully summon someone who can distinguish this better than I can. Thanks again for your patience trying to work this out. Hi @Jacketpocket! The convention I've seen across thousands of articles is to use the singular for species (because it's one species), and use the plural for higher level taxa like genus and family (because they contain a group of species). The example "Rose" is for a genus. It's a little more clear comparing, say, "Family of mammals" versus "Species of mammal". Thanks for checking and thank you so much for the thanks!
