You did it

A shirt with the text "I'm an admin and all I get is this crappy T-shirt :)"

Congrats on the mop; you made it through. Enjoy mopping; user:Qwerfjkl/scripts/CFDlister is super helpful for closing discussions. The "list discussions" button posts to WT:CFDW rather than WP:CFDW, so you have to click "edit discussions" and copy/paste them manually into CFD. (It was designed that way because my dear friend Qwerfjkl has yet to turn this link blue.) If you need any help, let me know. You've got this—I am certain you will be fantastic. A baton for you!

The admin baton
Per ancient tradition, it is my great pleasure to pass on this baton to you, as Curbon7 did to me. It serves as a reminder that, despite dramas petty and grand, we work together to build an encyclopedia. You, holding this baton, are saluted by all its past holders. Enjoy it and then pass it on to the next AELECT admin as soon as you can! jlwoodwa (talk) 00:10, 3 August 2025 (UTC)

The category coatracker

As I go through the towering pile of edits, I realize this is not a task for one person to do and it may end up with a block for the person trying to un-coatrack. I don’t know how best to ask this: why is there not a noticeboard filing for this editor yet? Mikewem (talk) 17:22, 10 March 2026 (UTC)

Well, we'd been trying to handle it here User_talk:HouseBlaster#I_need_an_uninvolved_opinion. But you're probably right.... SMasonGarrison 17:27, 10 March 2026 (UTC)
From my reading, it looks like HB announced they are sick and will need a short break, and then it looks to me like LNC took that as a go-ahead to put the pedal to the metal. Is my general summary of what happened there wrong? I’m not a cat expert, but LNC’s recent edits do not appear to me to be solely focused on fixing their own work. Mikewem (talk) 17:34, 10 March 2026 (UTC)
That is my reading as well. SMasonGarrison 17:35, 10 March 2026 (UTC)
And a lot of LNC’s work at Bondi was not great, a lot of it got reverted, they often had difficulty with reporting what reliable sources said. But I certainly don’t want to contradict an admin’s view of their work at Bondi. Mikewem (talk) 17:36, 10 March 2026 (UTC)
Could you make the report to ANI? I think it would be helpful to have someone familiar with the content area. SMasonGarrison 17:38, 10 March 2026 (UTC)
I am not happy to participate in noticeboards in general, but yes, I will do it. Mikewem (talk) 17:45, 10 March 2026 (UTC)
Thank you. I understand and appreciate your reluctance. I feel like I am too involved to effectively or objectively summarize the situation SMasonGarrison 17:49, 10 March 2026 (UTC)
The situation is 7000 contentious edits in 2 months, I don’t know if an effective summary is possible, but I’ll do what I can. Mikewem (talk) 18:06, 10 March 2026 (UTC)
Obviously I did not submit anything, essentially for the same reasons that led me to my initial reluctance.
My interest in this is just to keep the Bondi article manageable. As long as LNC’s edit velocity at that page does not become so high again that it overwhelms our ability to revert their mistakes or civil pov pushes, I can live with the status quo.
I’m gonna go back and look at their pile of category edits and see if there’s any more I can help un-f___ (an example of the type of edit I think might need to be un-f_____ would be LNC’s addition of a Christian terrorism cat to an article that doesn’t contain the word “Christian” (or any variant of the word)) Mikewem (talk) 17:15, 20 March 2026 (UTC)
That's ok. I think your heads up was sufficient to get them to actually register that there are consequences. SMasonGarrison 14:18, 21 March 2026 (UTC)

New category creations

Given your vast experience with categories, could you please take a peek at the categories being created by this new editor. Many of them are recreations of cats deleted at CfD and may need clean-up/attention.-- Ponyobons mots 22:30, 24 March 2026 (UTC)

Thanks for drawing this to my attention! @Ponyo From a superficial glance, this looks like a mess of underpopulated categories in the making. Let me dig some more SMasonGarrison 23:30, 24 March 2026 (UTC)
@Ponyo They are editing a lot of the same categories as SNAAAAKE!! SMasonGarrison 23:46, 24 March 2026 (UTC)
Interesting. The editing pattern did seem familiar to me, but I couldn't make a connection. I'll take a deeper look.-- Ponyobons mots 15:52, 25 March 2026 (UTC)

Joshua Casteel

Greetings, do you have a source for the claim that Joshua Casteel converted to Roman Catholicism? I didn't see anything to that effect in the article but I may have missed. Thanks. Mox La Push (talk) 04:21, 25 March 2026 (UTC)

I was basing it off of his presence in Category:Converts to Roman Catholicism from Evangelicalism. But if that's not accurate then I guess he should be removed from both categories. SMasonGarrison 04:25, 25 March 2026 (UTC)
It may be accurate but I'm not aware of anything in the article that indicates it is. I missed that other category. Mox La Push (talk) 05:14, 25 March 2026 (UTC)
Maybe we remove them for now, and add to the edit summary that it's unsournced? SMasonGarrison 05:16, 25 March 2026 (UTC)
The 2019 Smithsonian Magazine profile quotes his mother as saying that he prayed to Mary with his mother as a young child (his parents were separated) but I checked three or four sources and I don't see any evidence of him converting from Protestantism to Roman Catholicism. He chose a historically Baptist Divinity School and seems to have been a protege of sorts of Hauerwas, a Protestant. He did work with Catholics but that hardly makes him a convert.Mox La Push (talk) 05:28, 25 March 2026 (UTC)
Yeah, I agree with you. I've removed the categories and linked to this conversation: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Joshua_Casteel&diff=prev&oldid=1345259646 SMasonGarrison 05:30, 25 March 2026 (UTC)
Sorry, this NCR article says he converted to Anglo-Catholicism and then to Roman Catholicism: "He was confirmed in the Anglo-Catholic church, a small splinter denomination with roots in the Anglican Communion, and it wouldn’t be until after he returned from Iraq, where he regularly worshiped at Catholic services under a 'pastoral provision,' that he would formally join the Roman Catholic church." It is inaccurate to describe Anglo-Catholicism as a "splinter denomination" but that makes no difference. Mox La Push (talk) 05:52, 25 March 2026 (UTC)

note

I think I owe you an apology. I probably should have mentioned something earlier when you made the comment: "and now 3 admins have asked..." Reading that made me uncomfortable. I don't brandish that I have been entrusted with adminship, like a sword. When I act to prevent disruption of the project, I try to follow the standard of "firm but fair".

I appreciate and understand there may be behavioural issues here - which I think you two seem to be working out with Houseblaster's assistance.

Anyway, when I became uncomfortable, I should have mentioned it, and perhaps a recent mistake might have been avoided. So for that, you have my apology. - jc37 04:31, 27 March 2026 (UTC)

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it. I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable. Usually, I don't brandish it either. But that's probably another conversation after all of it plays out. SMasonGarrison 21:06, 27 March 2026 (UTC)

Hi

hi how are you? Thanks for showing patience regarding categorization... Can you briefly explain the concept of "container category" or link me to "in a nutshell"? Thanks again CoryGlee 17:55, 29 March 2026 (UTC)

A container category is a category just for other categories. Category:Container categories has some more information. Like in your case, 20th-century German men is a container category. If you click on the category you can see that it is labeled as container.SMasonGarrison 22:07, 29 March 2026 (UTC)

I used sort keys for some things. Can you be more specific about when I should have used them but didn't? Preferably ping me on the "category talk:" page of the category where you think I missed some. Alternatively, just ping me in a reply here. Late Night Coffee (talk) 01:05, 3 April 2026 (UTC)

Sort keys

Also, please use sort keys when you add categories. SMasonGarrison 00:56, 3 April 2026 (UTC)

@LateNightCoffee In general, you should be adding sort keys to things like 18th-century attacks on Jewish institutions, so that when you look at the category Category:18th century religiously motivated violence, it is sorted alphabetally. See this diff for an example: Please clean up, properly parent, and populate all of the categories you are currently making.SMasonGarrison 01:10, 3 April 2026 (UTC)
@Smasongarrison
Is there a list somewhere of how to use the special symbols? I've been skipping those because I don't know what they mean.
Please ping me in a reply here or on a category talk page.
Late Night Coffee (talk) 07:52, 4 April 2026 (UTC)
@LateNightCoffee Are you asking about a list for what the symbols are supposed to be used for? SMasonGarrison 14:23, 4 April 2026 (UTC)
@Smasongarrison yes, is there a key for the sort keys? The blank and asterisk and other non-letter non-number symbols. I've been skipping them because you objected to a few of my non-standard uses of sort keys, so I've been only using them when I'm sure it's a standard usage, but it would be better if there was a simple list somewhere? There probably is, but I haven't found it anywhere yet. The blank seems to be main, there's also an asterisk and one or two others, I don't know when to use those? Late Night Coffee (talk) 07:50, 5 April 2026 (UTC)
>so I've been only using them when I'm sure it's a standard usage
I think that that's a good strategy. I don't recommend you implement non-standard changes to sort keys. I am less familiar with the norms in events sort key conventions. SMasonGarrison 20:47, 7 April 2026 (UTC)
yes. Late Night Coffee (talk) 06:35, 7 April 2026 (UTC)

Uxoricide categories?

Hi Mason, I’ve noticed there is a parent category, Category:Perpetrators of uxoricide, with some sub-categories by country. I don’t like the name.

I think “uxoricide” is a fancy Latin-esque word that hides an ugly truth: husbands who kill their wives. I doubt that most people who see the word “uxoricide” will know what it means without some googling.

I’m not a fan of “perpetrator” either; it always strikes me as journalese, again to tone done what has happened.

Would there be any chance of changing it to a more obvious phrase that is more accessible to readers, like “Husbands who kill their wives”?

Do you think there would be any point to raising this on the category discussion boards? (I don’t know if there were any prior duscussion of these category names?) Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 03:15, 8 April 2026 (UTC)

I agree with many of your points (except perpetrator, because at least that tells you that it's the killer, not the victim). Have you looked through the edit history of the category (and similar ones, like Matricide, Patricide etc?) You might be able to dig up any old CFDs about it. It might be worthwhile raising a comment on the CFD talk page to get some more community thoughts before bringing something formal. Maybe someone else has a good idea? SMasonGarrison 23:51, 8 April 2026 (UTC)
Nitpicking: The word "uxoricide" describes only the victim and the relationship, not the killer. So it could be a wife killing a wife as well. rare, but it happens. – Jonesey95 (talk) 13:19, 11 April 2026 (UTC)

Typically when you respond elsewhere, the norm is to note that that is what you are doing. Your edit summary did not explain what you had done. And my past experiences with you did not give me confidence that you had seen or engaged with the conversation. Your talk page is a record of conversations, not just an inbox.

If there is a reason you avoid discussing issues in category talk space, please let me know what that is so that we can find a way to communicate with each other that works for everyone.

this comment surprises me. From our last series of interactions, you made it extremely clear that you had no interest in finding a way to communicate that would work for us both. I've intentionally disengaged. From my perspective, I put in a ton of effort trying to meet you were you were. And it felt like all I received was hosility/negativity in return. (I recognize that it was not all hosility/negativity, but frankly, it feels like it.)
I have have zero interest in returning to that dynamic. As I explained to @HouseBlaster: I have stopped trying to bend-over-backwards to try to help, but that I'm also not going to actively avoid the areas you edit in. My plan is to just treat you like everyone else, where I'll post advice on your talk page as I go about my own editing. SMasonGarrison 23:47, 8 April 2026 (UTC)

Category:Novels about slavery

Hello - Why do you want the above category to be in Category:Fiction about slavery and its parent Category:Works about slavery? Gjs238 (talk) 23:51, 17 April 2026 (UTC)

I reverted your sort key removal. You didn't explain your edit and it's typical to not jumble the medium and more specific topics together. SMasonGarrison 23:53, 17 April 2026 (UTC)
