Metrorail South Africa navbox question
Courtesy link: Template:Metrorail (South Africa) navbox
Hi, TechTipsProject. You asked me this question at my Talk page:
Hi Mathglot, I'd like to edit this navbox since the article for the Class 10Ms doesn't exist. Maybe I can make an article or remove it. Would it be better to make an article or remove it? Thanks in advance! --TechTipsProject (talk) 11:55, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
It's not necessarily an either-or. In the long run, an article should be written if there is sufficient sourcing for the Class 10M, but is there? I looked, using this search, and there are a lot of picture gallery sites, but not a lot of reliable sources. (Note: you have to throw out all social media, blogs, fan sites, and so on.) Without several reliable sources with significant coverage of the 10Ms, you cannot write the article because of Wikipedia's WP:Notability requirement.
Another possibility, would be to leave the 10M link in the navbox as a kind of placeholder until there is enough reliable sourcing, but link it to something that already exists, using a redirect. The natural target for a redirect imho would be a section about rolling stock in the article, Metrorail (South Africa). However, that article has nothing on rolling stock at all. So, to answer your question, here is what I would do:
- Find section § Track and equipment at Metrorail (South Africa) and create a new subsection under it, called
===Rolling stock===(or some other heading that makes sense) - write something brief summarizing the other EMUs that already have an article, like the 5M2, 8M, and X'Trapolis Mega, perhaps about one sentence for each one, including inline citations backing up whatever you write. You can probably copy citations straight out of the existing articles. I would save this (Publish) before going on.
- Find a reliable source about the 10M
- this might be hard! Here is an article from the Railway Gazette, but I can't read it, because of the paywall. If you can't either, try asking for help at Wikipedia:WikiProject Resource Exchange/Resource Request and at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Trains.
- or keep trying web search, or maybe a reference librarian at a South African library could help you
- be careful with sites like List of the vehicles SAR Class 10M, which appears to be a labor of love by some Russian rail fans; is it peer-reviewed? Is it reliable? It's not clear where they are getting their info; if they have it, we should be able to find it at a reliable site. You can ask a question about this site at the Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard and see what they say about it. [update: added here]
- If you can't find anything about the 10M at a reliable source, I would raise a new section at Template talk:Metrorail (South Africa) navbox recounting your experience, and saying you couldn't find anything, and maybe the 10M link should be deleted, and then stop; there is nothing else you can do at this time. Move on to something else.
- Write up a sentence or two about the 10M along with a citation to the source you found, and add it to the new subsection in Metrorail (South Africa).
- Create a new redirect to the new subsection you wrote, called South African Class 10M. (This will remain a red link here, until you create it).
- Verify that the '10M' link in the Nav box is now blue, and that it links to new section you created at Metrorail (South Africa).
- You're done. Congrats!
Does this seem complicated? Trust me, this is way, wa-a-ay, simpler than creating a new article. If you run into any problems, let me know! Mathglot (talk) 18:46, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
- FYI, per point #3 above, I started a discussion at Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard#railgallery.ru that you may wish to follow or participate in. Mathglot (talk) 19:46, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks very much for your help! I'll get started on the Article now. Have a great day! TechTipsProject (talk) 10:07, 2 April 2026 (UTC)
Draft:South African Class 10M
I fixed up a bunch of refs in Draft:South African Class 10M and tagged a couple others. You might want to resolve the tagged issues, as I think an Afc 'decline' is likely if not. Also, please use the citation parameters |date=, and |author= (or better: |last= and |first=) whenever possible. When Wikipedia has an article on the author, then please also add |authorlink=. Param |publisher= is nice to have, and I use it. Ditto |location= (but location is not as relevant in this article, where everything is from one place). Also please note that param |website= should be words, not a url domain, e.g: |website=SA News is okay, is not.|website=sanews.gov.za
Tip: if the rendered page doesn't have it, the author and date can sometimes be found in the <head> section of the Html of the page you are looking at. You can access page Html from any browser, try the main menu, or right-click > 'View page source' (or, > 'Developer tools', or similar). Also, was this a translation? You seemed to create it in a single edit, which is pretty ambitious for a new editor. Mathglot (talk) 21:22, 2 April 2026 (UTC)
- No it wasn't a translation, I was quite ambitious for this article since I ride one of these trains a lot when I'm on the local public transport in my area, so I decided to make a full-on article of it. It was my first article so I do apologise for missing several things on the article for the references. Thanks for the help once again! TechTipsProject (talk) 05:25, 5 April 2026 (UTC)
addictivetips.com for use as a reference in Wikipedia's Dashcam Article
Hi, TechTipsProject. This is a reply to your question at my Talk page.
- Copy of discussion originally at User talk:Mathglot.
Hi MathGlot, I've found a website called addictivetips.com which I'd like to use as a reference for the Wikipedia Dashcam article. The source is a guide on how to set up a GoPro as a Dashcam and it contains some Pros and Cons of setting it up, here's the article for reference, thanks in advance for any advice! https://www.addictivetips.com/buying-guides/gopro-as-dash-camera/ TechTipsProject (talk) 08:19, 7 April 2026 (UTC)
- TechTipsProject, there are two problems here. The first is that it's not 100% clear if the reference is a reliable source or not. It gets generally good reviews and has an editorial process, but it also has a disclosure that includes notes about affiliate payments, and while it is better to be transparent about that than not, it is still not optimal. If that were the only issue, I would probably run it by the WP:Reliable sources/Noticeboard to see what they say. And you can still do that if you want, but there is a much bigger problem, imho, that makes checking that website probably a waste of time.
- It is important to understand that the core mission of Wikipedia is to build an online encyclopedia. In particular, it is not a How-to guide or user manual. So what you are proposing to do, including both how to set up a Go-Pro as a dashcam and pro and con tips are basically out of bounds for a Wikipedia article. Note that even the GoPro article itself has nothing about how to set it up for any purpose, nor any useful tips, and if any article would have such information, that would be the one. In brief, I think you cannot go ahead with this plan because it is contrary to Wikipedia's main purpose. You are welcome to seek other opinions on this. You could try posing the question at the Wikipedia:Help desk; if you do, please link this discussion.
- More generally, I have some concerns about what your plans are at Wikipedia. We welcome new users and hope you stay, but your username gives me pause. If your personal goal is to add tech tips or how-to information to a variety of articles about technological products such as dashcams and the like, then in my opinion that is not going to work at all, as that goal is in conflict with Wikipedia's fundamental mission. On the other hand, we need new editors with an interest and passion in a topic area like this one. I hope that does not represent a course correction that would be too great for you, and I encourage you to stay on and improve our articles on tech products, while remaining within the bounds of the mission. Does that work for you? Cheers, Mathglot (talk) 18:13, 7 April 2026 (UTC)
- I understand, don't worry. I don't have intentions to conflict with the mission of Wikipedia and I have a passion for editing anything in general. I will improve the articles on the tech products and any other topics I can find, whether the article currently has unreliable as information or not. I found the website through searching for GoPro and dashcam tips and I looked at a few websites, then this one came out as the best to me. I also thought the username choice was nice, so I just decided on it. Thanks for letting me know about all of this. TechTipsProject (talk) 07:46, 8 April 2026 (UTC)
