Thanks! The GeoLocator is an easy way to add coordinates and you can copy and paste the tags on the left directly into Wikipedia. Previously I was using Google Earth and that took a lot longer. The 1924 and 1951 aerial photos in the NYCityMap are also helpful in finding the locations of things that no longer exist.Transpoman (talk) 00:37, 7 June 2012 (UTC)

Lovely. I less often geotag articles anymore, unless they have a bad location. Mostly I only find time to tag photos. My own, I adjust the camera's geotag before uploading as discussed in Commons:User:Jim.henderson#Geotagging. Umm, I should update that a bit. What's already on the Web site, I tag with the click-and-paste Google Earth add-on as described in that link. I noticed that you give every location down to a hundredth of an arcsecond, presumably because that's what Geolocator gives. That's appropriate for things the size of people but seems kinda odd for a neighborhood or a building. Anyway, what you're doing is not only good in general, but when it shows on Google Maps for Android Phone it helps me pedal my bike to the correct location to photograph it. Hi there, thanks for taking interest in improving the draft i started on Aldrich something building in Buffalo. I understand, agree that splitting author name into first vs last is an improvement, tho I haven't often made that effort. I dunno, maybe i should, u give me pause. But hey, I don't understand the benefit of switching "publisher=" to "work=". Does that even change appearance (i am not sure)? And in the case of news articles published in a given newspaper, isn't "publisher" accurate? I am not sure what "work" means, does it mean the article us a work of the author or that it is a work of the newspaper? I am honestly curious on your reasoning here. Please ping me if reply. The first and last parameters put the author name into the "Last Name, First Name" format. You also do this by entering the name in this format in the author parameter. The work, newspaper, or magazine parameter is used for the name of the periodical, which is displayed in italics. The publisher parameter isn't used for the name of the work. You can read more about these parameters on Template:Cite news.

I saw at Talk:East Side Trolley Tunnel a request for a map of the two portals. I added their coordinates to the infobox and a map with their two locations marked. (talk page stalker) @DMacks, I think you can check OpenStreetMap and see if the tunnel is mapped there. If it is, you may use the instructions at Wikipedia:Creating route maps from OpenStreetMap data to export the data to Commons, then add the map to the page using {{maplink}}. (You could also connect the OpenStreetMap item for the tunnel to the Wikidata item for the tunnel, but that takes far longer to update.)

Or I guess you could use a website/program like geojson.io and create your own map of the tunnel from there. – Epicgenius (talk) 23:32, 6 October 2023 (UTC)

I was performing maintenance on Category:Wikipedia requested maps and adding locations to prior requests - the main category is supposed to be empty but there were several hundreds of pages that were listed in there because they had not been subcategorized by regional location. It looks additional maintenance work may also be needed on Category:Wikipedia requested maps to remove the map request template from other Talk pages in instances where maps have since been included on the article page but the original map request on the Talk page was not deleted.

It seems like infoboxes can be used to automatically generate maps once coordinates have been entered. I removed the map request from the Skilak Lake article since a map is no longer needed. Thanks for noticing this. I did see some instances of map requests on other pages asking for more information besides a dot on a map, such as Talk:Ocala National Forest which asks for a map showing the borders of the forest, but this wasn't the case in the map request for Skilak Lake.Transpoman (talk) 11:40, 24 September 2023 (UTC)

What is the point of adding additional specificity to photo requests? I'm looking at Talk:Quigley Catholic High School. The only visible difference that your change makes is that it no longer mentions the category Wikipedians in Pennsylvania. Wasn't it a good idea to mention that category? I added the county to the photo request template, which moved the Talk page from Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Pennsylvania to Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Beaver County, Pennsylvania. Hi, I saw that you made an edit about geodata (or lack of) on my recently completed Cook County Poor Farm, Illinois page. Thanks for the contribution. I just added an infobox that included the street names that bounded the original property. I have little experience with geography or maps. I decided to select the current Read Dunning Memorial Park as a safe spot to locate coordinates. It is where the main buildings were located, and is now owned by the County. I will be creating its wiki page next month. My question: Do you think it would be better to show the original boundaries of the Poor Farm from 1854-1912 or the one map coordinate (point?) is better? Selecting the location of the main buildings sounds logical to me. You could always adjust the coordinate parameters to modify the level of precision, especially if it was a site with multiple buildings. You can also look at the guidelines in WP:OPCOORD for more details. The particular tool I use to obtain coordinates is GeoLocator] and it allows you to modify the level of precision and show a rectangle outlining the extents of the selected precisions. That's the great grand convention. We also have one or two smaller meetings every month. The majority of those have a theme, but anyone who shows up is likely to find someone to talk to about any Wiki-related topic. Like, if the theme is gardening or music but someone wants to talk about single-leaf bascule bridges or the tunnel ventilation structure on Governors Island, then we do, or at least I do. The Beach 44th Street station doesn't have any mention of the demolished buildings or how useless is this station. It would be appropriate to demolish it entirely, but it doesn't have any sequence of rolling stock that can bypass it in the current track configuration without extending the wye across the channel. Here and here and possibly elsewhere you've requested photos for articles that already have photos but you don't specify exactly what additionally you want a photo of, if the photos already on the articles don't meet your needs. The template {{Photo requested}} has the parameter "|of=" for making specific requests. Otherwise, I'm quite confused as to what you want by adding the requests. -- Veggies (talk) 03:57, 22 January 2026 (UTC)

I didn't make those original photo requests and just changed the "|in=" to reflect the county they were located in so they showed up in the listing for Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Baltimore County, Maryland. I'm aware of the "|of=" parameter, but unfortunately there are other editors that may not know about it or do not take the time to fill out the "|in=" and/or "|of" parameters when they make the original request. Other times someone will add a photo to the article without knowing that there was a request for a photo on the Talk page and/or remove the photo request after it is no longer needed. Sometimes you need to dig back through the edit history on the Talk page to find the date when the photo request was added and then go back on the article history to see what the article looked like on that same date when the photo request was added. Other times you need to look at the discussions on the Talk page to see if there was anything related to what exactly was being requested for a photo, and if there is a summary of what was requested could be added to the "|of=" parameter so it is easier for other editors to quickly see. - Transpoman (talk) 09:59, 22 January 2026 (UTC)
