Nationalities

Hi, please be careful about changing people's nationalities on Wikipedia. It's a very touchy subject and making a lot of these changes makes it start to look a bit questionable. You always need sources to support the change you want to make, and in this case, you need sources that show the subject identifies as the nationality you're switching to. Being born in a part of the UK is not sufficient to synthesise a nationality without a supporting source. Cheers, Bretonbanquet (talk) 00:44, 3 February 2026 (UTC)

Ah yes, I should have used sources before changing nationalities then. But, how do I find sources on the article that supports the nationality then? I was a bit weary about changing it but I want to be bold and change it. Again, my apologies for all this trouble man. TyronesEditsPages (talk) 05:19, 4 February 2026 (UTC)
Hey, no worries! Yeah, because English isn't a legal nationality, it's all down to self-identification. There was a situation at Idris Elba which was the same thing. People were able to find interviews with him where he clearly stated he considered himself English, and that's enough. Otherwise it's not always clear if someone considers themselves British or English. You could be born in England but maybe your parents aren't English, or maybe one is Scottish or something, and you identify as British to cover all bases. British nationality is different because it's automatic if someone was born in the UK before 1983. If they had one British parent and were born here after 1983, British citizenship is also automatic. So the British nationality generally doesn't need sources in the same way – birthplace and one British parent is enough. Hope that helps! Bretonbanquet (talk) 22:22, 4 February 2026 (UTC)
So if someone's nationality born in the UK is uncertain, would it be neutral to call someone British then? This is my first time doing this since I am not from the UK so again, pardon my mistakes. TyronesEditsPages (talk) 05:18, 5 February 2026 (UTC)
Very much so. It means you can't make a mistake, basically. Even if someone considers themselves English or Scottish, Welsh etc – their legal citizenship (passport etc) is still British so if there's any doubt, "British" covers it. That's OK! It even confuses Brits sometimes! Bretonbanquet (talk) 12:28, 5 February 2026 (UTC)
