The character was originally conceived by the Wikimedian Jonathan Ferreira and introduced on Wikimedia blogs[1] and the 25th birthday livestream.[3]
Creation

The mascot's original design was created by Jonathan Ferreira, inspired by 1920s rubber hose animation style. Jonathan has stated that of the motivating reasons for coming up with a mascot was to get more involved with the Wikimedia community. The mascot started as a simple sketch drawn on a phone on Jonathan's train commute.[4]

The art direction for the final version of Baby Globe featured on Wikipedia's front page was set by Sharon Park, with hand-drawn animations created by Axel Kinnear.[5]
Use

The Baby Globe appeared on various different Wikipedia pages as an interactive easter egg experiment that went live on from February to March 2026. The goal of the experiment was to allow readers to discover different kinds of surprises when browsing certain Wikipedia pages.[6]
The Baby Globe animations were in a variety of themes, loosely correlating to the theme of the article. For example, a "Laptop Baby Globe" would appear on an article about the Internet, and a "Camera Baby Globe" would appear on pages about Unesco World Heritage sites. The appearance of Baby Globe article was hand-curated for each article.[7]
Some animations were also activated for user interaction; for example, users would see Baby Globe pick up a flashlight when the user would switch on dark mode.[7]

A Baby Globe collectable plush, developed in collaboration with Makeship, was available for pre-order until February 13 2026.[8]
Baby Globe was removed from Wikipedia on April 7, 2026. It is possible to restore it with a user script (only for Vector-2022). There is also a user script to replace the Wikipedia logo, with examples of replacing it with various Baby Globe images.
Reception
Baby Globe received generally positive reception, including within the Wikipedia community.[9]
Some concerns were raised over the mascot appearing on articles about bleak subjects, which would be inappropriate. Some users also felt the mascot was "immature" for an organization like Wikipedia, and criticized the fact that the feature was enabled by default.[10]
Creative Bloq described Baby Globe as "an adorable mascot to bring a little added joy to your wiki-surfing" and stated that it is "worthy of a spot in the iconic brands hall of fame".[8]
