Wikipedia:April Fools' Main Page/Did you know

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Please use this page for discussions surrounding the creation of "Did You Know" items for April Fools' Day 2026

Areas of work needed to complete the front page are:

Ground rules for this activity along with a list of participants may be found on the Main talk page.

Rules

April Fools Did You Know items should present some trivia that can be presented in a manner that is possibly unbelievable to the reader. This can be done through words or names that mean two different things, shortened names, unbelievable facts, unrelated facts, etc. The normal written and unwritten rules for Did You Know (DYK) are followed, with these exceptions...

  • April Fools DYKs are subject to the usual exclusions regarding prior Main Page appearance, but the normal rules for special occasions do not apply: the article need only have been created/expanded/brought to GA in the year immediately preceding the April 1 on which it will appear.
  • Proper capitalization, title formatting, and linking standards may be disregarded only if adhering to them will tend to give away the joke. This should be done as little as possible. (example from 2009: "... that Caviar, Chardonnay, and Hot Cocoa compete for the love of Ray J? ")

All other Wikipedia rules and guidelines still apply. Pay special attention to Wikipedia's Biographies of living persons guidelines if your hook relates to a living person.

Remember, we are trying to confuse and mislead Wikipedians and visitors, not lie to them. Keep all hooks and articles completely truthful, but outrageous. (examples from 2010: A hook claiming Dmitry Medvedev died in 2005 is ok, saying Mikheil Saakashvili died is not.)

How to review a nomination

Any editor who was not involved in writing/expanding or nominating an article may review it by checking to see that the article meets the DYK criteria except, per above, the normal new enough rule (long enough, no serious editorial or content issues) and the hook is cited. Editors may also alter the suggested hook to improve it, suggest new hooks, or even lend a hand and make edits to the article which the hook applies so that the hook is supported and accurate. For a more detailed discussion of the DYK rules and review process see the guidelines.

If you want to confirm that an article is ready to be placed on a later update, or note that there is an issue with the article or hook, please use the following symbols to point the issues out:

Overall: Nice article with interesting hooks, especially ALT2 for WP:DYKAPRIL. There are uncited paragraphs in the article which I've marked with {{cn}} per WP:DYKCITE. I'm also a little concerned about notability, as most of the sources seem to be quite old and/or WP:PRIMARY. Image is not that clear, so should probably not run. ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 13:07, 11 March 2026 (UTC)

Reply: I made several edits and fixed your citation noted portions a day or two ago. I then found several more "aha" resources that are not all primary sources. We have several newspaper articles that are retrospective of this individual, as he was prominent enough to have a memorial placed in the 1960s. I switched to quoting the best secondary sources with a method that preserves the page number. The newspaper articles about him are substantially short enough to need just a single cite. While editing Joe, I discovered his brother was perhaps as prominent or more than he was ... he also has a monument ... and statue ... on his tomb. Joe was one of the main Osage leaders in stories from the late 1860s to the early 1880s. His brother didn't gain prominence until later. The article's quality isn't exactly a full featured article, but it stands as one of the most comprehensive biographies available anywhere, basing it on a plethora of sources scattered widely and only recently available to a global audience.
I am not sure what the problem with the photo is with clarity at 100px. I would like another opinion. It's just a simple crop from a 150 year old print. There are other images of him on the Internet but probably not uploaded to Wikipedia yet. This was a studio photo from around the early to mid 1870s. Thanks ~~ AirshipJungleman29 for your input. I would like to move forward with the April 1 potential for 2026. I feel the quality of the article is sufficient to stand beside any other leader from the Osage nation, and is likely better than any who lived so long ago. I like to saw logs! (talk) 22:10, 13 March 2026 (UTC)
Approved, with no comment re. notability, which I don't have the knowledge to assess fully. The image is poorly lit and thus will not display well in the main page template (see WP:DYKIMG), so again I'd recommend against running it (a shame considering the excellent caption). ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 11:43, 19 March 2026 (UTC)

  • Hi CosXZ, review follows: short article but for an aircraft of limited production and use; it has passed GA review on 7 July; sources are all offline but I have confirmed existence of the subject in Jane's Encyclopedia of Aviation of 1980; hooks are interesting and mentioned in the article; will need to AGF that there is no copying from offline sources, the Earwig online checker is clear; hooks are fun enough for April Fool's Day, if needed. I do wonder if it should be "had" rather than "have" as the article doesn't say if any samples survive, but will leave that to the promoter - Dumelow (talk) 08:02, 8 July 2025 (UTC)

  • Comment: Article is new enough (+85,978, no drafts???). Article is long enough. Earwig shows minimal similarity. Due to the amount of offline sources, I'm going to have to assume good faith that most claims are accurate to the source, though I see no claims needing a citation that doesn't have one. Article is presentable. Spotchecked four/five photographs, including hook one, licenses all check out. Hook's short enough. QPQ is done. No other issues.

  • The article is new enough (created in the year before next 1 April in 2026), is long enough (2997 characters of prose), has no major sourcing or copyright issues (every paragraph has a reference, the article uses reliable sources Rolling Stone, Billboard, The Hollywood Reporter, sources #1 #7 checked), and is presentable (per readthrough). The hook is not cited in this nomination, but the information is cited in the article, however it fails verification for the set list of the livestream. It says about this: "While the set list is being kept under wraps, it’s likely Cameron will perform “Too Much” along with the handful of other new tracks during the fan event." Could you quote a source that confirms that "French Girls" was featured on that livestream? The hook is short enough and interesting for 1 April. QPQ is done. – Editør (talk) 15:11, 27 May 2025 (UTC)

Overall: Article was nominated for DYK within 7 days of being moved to mainspace. It is over 1,500 words, written neutrally, and is sourced. Earwig picked up an unlikely copyright violation of 9.9% and most of what Earwig picked up are quotations from the article. The article does not overquote the source and the sources used . QPQ is done. ALT0 is a good hook, but I also rewrote it for further elaboration; let me know if it's OK. Thank you for the review! I do still like my original hook just because less is more when it comes to punchiness, but there's obviously some bias in that analysis and I would be fine if a set-builder preferred your phrasing over mine (of course, assuming that this doesn't make the cut for an April Fools' hook). Launchballer 10:13, 7 December 2025 (UTC).

Comment I think this hook needs a little more workshopping for accuracy and to meet WP:DYKINT. I'd suggest this alternative:

ALT2: ...that online stores prohibiting the sale of horses sparked discussions about censorship?

The reason why I suggest this alternative is because it makes clear that only some stores barred the game's sale, as opposed to how an average person might understand the word "ban" (as meaning a prohibitive action with legal force, for instance). I also think that "adult content" should be left out, both to keep the hook concise, and also not to bias the reader's expectations in any particular direction. It's also generally more accurate in my opinion, since the discourse has not exclusively centered on concerns about adult content (which itself is a bit of a loaded term, as while it can technically mean anything meant to be engaged with by adults, it's generally understood to mean "pornography"). silviaASH (inquire within) 11:33, 7 December 2025 (UTC)

Agree that instead of suffered a ban, which is vague, something like ALT3 ALT2 conveys much more accurate meaning without being loaded with bias. VRXCES (talk) 13:16, 7 December 2025 (UTC)
Procedural note: These two comments were initially erroneously placed on the article's talk page, rather than within the DYK nomination page. I have since moved them here after noticing the mistake. silviaASH (inquire within) 12:32, 15 December 2025 (UTC)
Courtesy ping to Vrxces, who created the page and made the other misplaced comment and may want to participate in discussion here. silviaASH (inquire within) 12:37, 15 December 2025 (UTC)
        • Reserving. My first observation is that the hook ought to say Horses with a proper noun, as it may be confusing otherwise. I.e. " ... that a November 2025 ban on the video game Horses sparked discussion about censorship of adult content?" - Cukie Gherkin (talk) 04:05, 14 December 2025 (UTC)
I had intended this as an April Fool's nom, but I'm fine with that.--Launchballer 04:08, 14 December 2025 (UTC)
Word? I overlooked that it was intended for April Fool's. In that case, I kind of like ALT1 from that angle. - Cukie Gherkin (talk) 04:30, 14 December 2025 (UTC)
I personally think that something like the ALT2 I proposed would be preferable. ALT1 doesn't attract much interest, because it's not inconceivable that the keeping or riding of actual horses would be banned in some form in one or another jurisdiction for a variety of possible reasons, so it's not inherently interesting. However, a hook like ALT2 raises some questions. Like, "wait, why would you buy a horse online," and then "why would not being able to buy a horse online be related to censorship". It sounds more unusual to an uninitiated reader, while being completely factually correct in a literal sense, so I think it's more ideal and does a better job of meeting DYKINT than just "horses were banned, somewhere". silviaASH (inquire within) 12:24, 15 December 2025 (UTC)
I realized after making the above comment that my proposed alternative was not visible here on the nomination page and I'd left it on the talk page by mistake. I've since rectified that error and merged the earlier discussion comments from the talk page to here. silviaASH (inquire within) 12:47, 15 December 2025 (UTC)

        Checking off the important stuff

        • Article is only slightly older than seven days on nomination, but honestly that feels like it could just as well be a rounding error essentially, so no issue for me.
        • Article is adequately cited
        • IDK if this affects anything wrt the April Fool's Day joke, but I noted that there's no source for the hook. Is that to avoid spoiling it? Is it possible to find a source that doesn't spoil it with the URL title?
Should be in the article. I make a point of not providing it here because I've seen too many reviewers tick it off based on what's here and not there.--Launchballer 13:14, 14 December 2025 (UTC)

It is fact about the song being that old and from where (and interesting that from two areas now in different countries, and even then disconnected). The rest is a translation of things from the first stanza, to say what someone not reading German could not know. It adds interest, - I don't know about any other song imagining the little angels doing somersaults (rolling over, see below), and it connects to the image (which isn't brilliant but has a similar idea). Sadly, it hasn't been translated into English, and is so much (cute) dialect that translation programs won't help. - Listen, it's fun ;) - Thanks to Michael Bednarek who brought that into our Lilypond. Other hook ideas welcome, of course. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:42, 7 December 2025 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Our guidelines already state that saying that an article subject is a work of fiction does not count as meeting the real-world requirement for the purposes of WP:DYKFICTION. A new angle may be needed here. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 08:44, 7 December 2025 (UTC)
What in "18th-century song from Tyrol and Swabia" is fiction? We better also say what it is about, especially if that is interesting: little angels tumbling through the gate of Heaven that opened. I found a site translating into German, and that fed to Deepls results in: "The heavenly gate has opened / The little angels tumble out in great numbers / The boys and girls do somersaults / First up and down, then back and forth / Then below again, then on top of each other, which makes them even happier." Listen and enjoy. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:57, 7 December 2025 (UTC)
WP:DYKFICTION states simply acknowledging that a hook is about a creative work is not sufficient, nor is adding an unrelated real-world fact to a hook which is otherwise about a creative element. In this case, saying that the hook's subject is a real-world carol from a real-world place (such as saying that the carol came from Austria), but is still ultimately about "in-universe" or "in-plot" information (i.e. what is happening in the carol), would not count as a real-world connection. Gerda, you've got some great potential hooks in that article. You don’t need my help. Viriditas (talk) 20:03, 7 December 2025 (UTC)
          • This appears to be at an impasse, so giving some hook suggestions here. One of the hooks is misleading, but it might work as an April Fools hook if you are willing to have this run on April Fools instead of Christmas. However, it might also work as a quirky.
Pinging Viriditas for thoughts on these proposals. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 10:15, 9 December 2025 (UTC)
Thank you for the offers. I am not interested in ALT2, because it is purely historical and offers no joy. I could live with ALT1 if nothing else gets accepted, but hope we will not have to do that. ALT3 is correct, but true for more than this song, and softly misleading regarding what "too secular" may mean. I thought of the following (before I saw the suggestions, - just had no time yet):
I would like the information about the two disconnect areas without saying "first" or "only", as unusual. I would like a hint at how old this is, - Mozart may have known it (published the year he was born, but probably older), imagine ;) - Have you listened? I would like to offer some of the fun in this song as a little Christmas present. Any suggestion to capture the little boys and girls angels enjoying their playing is welcome. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:52, 9 December 2025 (UTC)
          • A full review is needed here for ALT1-4. ALT0 has been struck due to the aforementioned DYKFICTION concerns. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 03:20, 11 December 2025 (UTC)
          I take.--Launchballer 18:08, 19 December 2025 (UTC)
@Gerda Arendt: Long enough, new enough. QPQ done and Earwig has no valid complaints. ALT1 would need a link to Karl Marx and I prefer not to remove non-bolded links unless necessary and ALT2 is a superlative and needs excellent sourcing. I see no problem with ALT3, although perhaps you'd like to explain why it's "softly misleading". There's the germ of a good hook in ALT4; I have never heard of Tyrol or Swabia and would suggest that "such as purzigagalan (somersaults)" wants trimming, although a song containing dialect words from two countries strikes me as unusual. The only place I can find the word 'dialect' is in the lead, where it is unsourced. Per WP:DYKHOOK, I must ask for a quote from any offline sources used for any hooks. Also, I'm just about to nominate XMAS (song) for DYK; please consider reviewing.--Launchballer 20:32, 19 December 2025 (UTC)
Thank you for reviewing. I forgot that someone not knowing German of course can't see that the text is mostly dialect, compare this translation. I'd like to use it but it says Austrian/Bavarian while the other sources are more precise about Tyrol and Swabia. Tyrol is a state of Austria, as Texas is one of the U.S., with its own dialect. What can we do? My problem with ALT3 - as said - is that more than one hymn have been regarded as too secular. Several hymns began as love songs. It has nothing about what is special to this song: children at play, - I don't know any other carol with the idea of the angels enjoying somersaults (rolling over). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:44, 19 December 2025 (UTC)
@Launchballer: would ALT4a: ... that "Es hat sich halt eröffnet", a traditional 18th-century Christmas carol, uses German and Austrian dialect words? be more accurate? As for ALT1, the idea was to have the link if it doesn't run on April Fool's, to make it clear that it is not referring to that Karl Marx. Only if it was an AFD hook would the link be removed. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 01:46, 20 December 2025 (UTC)
The problem is that this needs a source that actually says they're dialect words, and I'd still need a quote from the source.--Launchballer 02:55, 20 December 2025 (UTC)
@Launchballer: If that's the case, then perhaps either ALT1 or ALT3 is usable then? Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 03:10, 20 December 2025 (UTC)
The Marx hook checks out, though is best saved for April Fools' day. I'd still need a quote from the source for ALT3.--Launchballer 03:18, 20 December 2025 (UTC)
Since I asked, I slept. Now, there's real life. I will try to look at the sourcing, and hope it will be today. What I don't understand is: Why couldn't I use the translation from dialect to German, with its obvious differences, as a source? The German Wikipedia doesn't offer one, because its a default that a 1756 song from Tyrol will be in that dialect. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:01, 20 December 2025 (UTC)
Or how is this, not fiction but only saying what the topic is:
ALT4b: ... that in "Es hat sich halt eröffnet", an 18th-century Christmas carol from both Tyrol and Swabia, the angels are imagined as boys and girls enjoying somersaults?
Or shorter, but missing the interesting detail "from different areas":
ALT4c: ... that in "Es hat sich halt eröffnet", a traditional 18th-century Christmas carol, the angels are imagined as boys and girls enjoying somersaults?
Or any other ideas of saying what makes this song different from all others? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:18, 20 December 2025 (UTC)
ALT4d: ... that "Es hat sich halt eröffnet", an 18th-century Christmas carol from both Tyrol and Swabia, uses the word "purzigagalan"? I think that it would come across that this is a funny word in whatever language, and we are requested to not "say it all". --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:59, 21 December 2025 (UTC)
I don't think that simply having an unusual-sounding foreign word in a hook counts as "funny" most of the time. We've tried similar angles in the past and they didn't work out. I actually like the idea behind ALT4b and ALT4c, but the issue is that I still feel that they are too close to WP:DYKFICTION for comfort. I'm not sure though if Launchballer thinks they count as fiction though, so maybe they will have a different opinion. If that ever happens, I'd be fine with either ALT4b or ALT4c, but not ALT4d (although I think the non-ALT4 angles are probably stronger). Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 00:12, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
That's a fair point. I also can't see "purzigagalan" or "somersaults" in the article. As Christmas Eve is in the next-but-one set to be promoted, I strongly advise that you give me a quote from the source for ALT3 so I can approve it.--Launchballer 01:15, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
I can give you a hook that has nothing to do with fiction and that is
ALT5: ... that "Es hat sich halt eröffnet" is an 18th-century Christmas carol from both Tyrol and Swabia?
Only: that leaves out all the fun in the song.
I am sorry that I didn't have time yet to write more about the text, but began it now, which should support ALT4 and variants, the title being chosen for a collection of Tyrol Christmas songs, and the beginning quoted in three lines as an expression of childlike joy. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:08, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
I am sorry also about the translation of the purzigagalan. In conversation with native speakers I found that, while Deepl gave me somersault as translation of Purzelbaum, the German word for purzigagalan, when I translate it back it's Salto in German, which is a specific and more acrobatic term. I was advised to try "roll over", help in the matter is appreciated, but we surely should not make it part of the hook if it will be misunderstood. Striking those ALTs. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:00, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
If the most interesting point here, as Launchballer suggests, is that the hymn uses dialect words from two different countries, why not just go with ALT4a? It makes the Austria/Germany connection explicit: a reader may not get that Tyrol and Swabia are in different countries without clicking the links. If the main reason is to introduce those places, we could go with something like:
However, it does lose the connection to the dialects. Another possible wording could be:
However, that could make the hook more complicated. Personally I would probably go with ALT3 as it is straight to the point and more likely to get readership, whereas these attempts to workshop ALT4/ALT5 are just resulting in unnecessarily complex hooks. I know that ALT3 isn't unique to the carol, as you said, but it's still an unusual piece of information that most people probably don't know. ALT1 is a possibility if you are fine with the hook running on a day other than Christmas. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 12:09, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
Thank you for trying to help! Besides my objection to the ALTs missing all the joy and fun this song offers, they might end up at ERRORS because when created there was no Austria nor Germany in the modern sense, and as we are talking about the time of creation, it would be historically wrong. Also: it seems unusual enough that one song comes from two different regions, - without the complication of countries that don't really matter. Therefore I'd prefer ALT5 over its ALTs. But it's missing all the childlike joy and dialect fun of this song, - boys offering cheese to the baby ;) - I'd prefer it over no DYK at all, though. Viriditas, what do you think? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:35, 22 December 2025 (UTC)

@Gerda Arendt: The solution to that is ALT5c: ... that the 18th century Christmas carol "Es hat sich halt eröffnet" is from the now-Austrian region Tyrol and the now-German region Swabia?. I see this is sourced to one offline source and two online sources, both of which imply Tyrol and Swabia are part of Austria and Germany but don't outright say it.--Launchballer 02:45, 23 December 2025 (UTC)

I know Gerda really wants to go with this angle, but isn't this wording just making the hook too clunky? The alternative would be to use just ALT5, but then it would lose the Germany/Austria context, so it's not ideal either. In any other circumstance I would be fine with this angle, but given how much has to be done to this angle to make it "work", I'm not sure why we don't just go with another angle altogether since they don't have the same accuracy or clunkiness issues. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 05:32, 23 December 2025 (UTC)
I have a wish for Christmas to Narutolovehinata5: please don't begin a sentence with "I know Gerda" ;) - or more seriously: only 2 comments for all participants in any discussion. What I wanted to tell (per: "Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it") is the story of ALT0, and ALT5c is lawyering in my book, - Of the questions what? where? when? - it has a focus on "where", and "what" is missing. - ALT4d would be my choice among the open ones, - let readers find out where Tyrol is and what purzigagalan are. Listen and enjoy, - thanks to Michael the lilypond in the article is fun! I have no more time for this. In dulci jubilo, now sing and be glad! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:41, 23 December 2025 (UTC)
          • @Launchballer: I've been thinking about this, and I wonder if ALT5a/ALT5b could be revisited. It seems like a good compromise between Gerda's desire to highlight the regions, and your desire to highlight the countries, while avoiding the clunkiness of ALT5c. The issue is that "Tyrol" also includes a part in Italy, so saying "Tyrol, Austria" would be at best misleading (there is no such issue for Swabia, which as far as I can tell is entirely in present-day Germany). If the song originated from present-day Austria, then perhaps we can come up with a solution, but that is not clear in the sources. The safest option could be to just go with ALT5, if you prefer that angle, but it does mean it makes less obvious the "different countries" aspect you wanted to highlight.
There is also still the option of going with ALT3, which avoids the issue entirely (I do not see the "it's not unique" concern as an issue since it is still not something the average reader would know); ALT1 is also now an option since the hook missed running on Christmas. • How about using "Austrian Tyrol" and "German Swabia"? Dahn (talk) 17:50, 3 January 2026 (UTC)
I don't remember if the conversation had already that when the song was texted there was neither today's Germany nor today's Austria. Also: all the territory things say nothing about the topic. We sang it today with several people who didn't know it and we had a lot of fun that is missing in talking about locations only. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:11, 3 January 2026 (UTC)
Gerda, this is your comment from almost a month ago, on this very page: "and interesting that from two areas now in different countries, and even then disconnected". Dahn (talk) 07:40, 5 January 2026 (UTC)
At the time, I wanted Christmas Eve, and was willing to almost anything. We missed the chance. More interesting because more unique than any locations is the funny imagination (roll over backwards and forwards from heaven, offer cheese asking the baby). We seem to have guidelines that go for locations rather than fantasy, but is that a good thing? Can we have a bit of both, perhaps? Would we say about Beethoven's Fifth Symphony only where it was written? At this point, how about ALT3. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:16, 5 January 2026 (UTC)

          • Not (yet) a review, but as much as I'd really like to see more Philippine representation on DYK, neither hook as currently written seems to meet DYKINT. The first doesn't seem all that surprising, that a country's army would fund the development of a military project? Multiple company biddings are the norm for military projects as well, so ALT1 as currently written is not interesting. I think there might be some potential for a different hook angle if the appropriate context is provided: after all, the Philippine military is notoriously underfunded and underdeveloped, so perhaps a hook that involves that theme in some way might work. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 01:25, 9 January 2026 (UTC)
Only (for now) reason why I advocate for ALT 0 is because it's generally unheard of with the DOST and the PA splitting the funding. Most of the defense hardware acquisitions are done through foreign contracts and the local ones from the Marcos-era SRDP relied on licensed production. Plus, there aren't a lot of local defense companies out there as far as I know that are still alive. Honestly don't have other ideas for ALTs if you're willing to shoot them down. There's BUHAWI too, but that's also another recent example. The other attempts to make local hardware after the downfall of Marcos Sr. didn't do much as private companies didn't get that support from the government, which is why I find it interesting/surprising the government "solely" stepped in. Ominae (talk) 04:12, 10 January 2026 (UTC)
The issue is that ALT0's interest would really depend on knowing Philippine military or defense-related context, and regrettably that would fall under DYKINT. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 13:10, 11 January 2026 (UTC)
IMO, not necessary, though I get the point why you'd say that. I did a DYK nomination for the Counterintelligence Group and it went through. At this point, I'd rather wait for a second opinion. Still have no idea on what kind of DYK question if you've shot them down at least. Ominae (talk) 02:55, 12 January 2026 (UTC)

@Ominae: Long enough, new enough. QPQ is nowhere near a full review, but seems to have run without issue I'll take it. Earwig is clean. No reason why the article would deserve a maintenance template, though I removed an inappropriate {{opinion}} tag. The problem with ALT2 is that the source attributes and the hook doesn't, and this needs rectifying. You may also wish to suggest an WP:DYKAPRIL hook involving "cobras".--Launchballer 22:22, 12 February 2026 (UTC)

It's a cute hook, but I don't know if it would pass scrutiny given it might be seen as misleading or easter eggy. The only way I see ALT6 passing is if it is used as an April Fools' hook. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 13:57, 26 February 2026 (UTC)
Well Launchballer suggested getting an ALT as an April's Fool DYK as a way to resolve this. I'm down with it since the other DYKs I proposed are shot down and I'm getting tired of it. Ominae (talk) 15:07, 26 February 2026 (UTC)

In the interest of this moving forward, since there are no other options and the only option would only work for April Fools', I am approving ALT6 only. Whether or not it actually runs on April Fools', and what happens if it doesn't run on that day (we already have multiple DYKAPRIL hooks and I'm not sure if we can run them all), let's cross that bridge when we get there. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 01:29, 27 February 2026 (UTC)
@Narutolovehinata5: - Thanks for helping push this forward. I'm not experienced in DYK politics, but if my ignorant opinion even matters, I do think hooks like these are okay on regular days too (but this should be an exception when all other options were denied and we should exercise caution). • To be honest, an authentic TFA prank in the spirit of the Rickroll trolling would be extremely difficult to not give away given the usual size of the TFA blurb (which most viewers are used to), whereas a DYK blurb is short enough to make the blurb vague enough to make the prank authentic. I'm reviewing the GA and ALT0 (though I started last night and forgot to note so at that time), but I'll object to having ALT1 or the "you know the rules" proposal for DYKAPRIL since they also give away the joke. ミラP@Miraclepine 13:58, 6 March 2026 (UTC)

          QPQ: Done.

Overall: Promoted to GA on nom day, size 33 kB. QR code is used in page, is PD, and works at 120px. ALT0 checks out and is verified, but I'll propose ALT0B in case this is approved for DYKAPRIL, provided Rickrolled is approved for such (the WaPo ref verifies the "popular" part by saying it has one billion views); the link is fixed so that it's in line with the prank:

          • ALT0b: ... that a popular video has been used by Apple, the White House, an MLB stadium, and a Disney film?

          @Vigilantcosmicpenguin: What do you think? ミラP@Miraclepine 19:42, 6 March 2026 (UTC)

          • @Miraclepine: ALT0b is technically not accurate as it says "video", but some of these just used the song itself. Either the original ALT0 or another similar hook would be acceptable. — Vigilant Cosmic Penguin 🐧(talk | contribs) 21:46, 6 March 2026 (UTC)
Sorry for the minor confusion - I spent a lot of time reviewing all the GA references. So, how about this: a technically-accurate ALT0c which is designed to mislead in line with DYKAPRIL, and a more airtight but less April Foolsy ALT0d.
          • ALT0c: ... that a popular song has been used by Apple, the White House, an MLB stadium, and a Disney film?
          • ALT0d: ... that a popular meme has been used by Apple, the White House, an MLB stadium, and a Disney film?
For verifying ALT0c: Apple uses the lyrics; White House and MLB uses the music video; Disney uses the meme but ref doesn't say in toto the song is sung, which may attract verification concerns, but I found a ref which confirms this. Regarding Apple and Disney, the lyrics (sung or not; as well as even covered) are technically part of the song, which may help with the confusion part of the meme even as it's technically accurate. Oh, and for ALT0d: all four refs say they're using the meme.
          @Vigilantcosmicpenguin: Thoughts? ミラP@Miraclepine 22:08, 6 March 2026 (UTC)
@Miraclepine: Yep, these hooks should work. — Vigilant Cosmic Penguin 🐧(talk | contribs) 22:55, 6 March 2026 (UTC)
@Vigilantcosmicpenguin: Shouldn't the failed verification tags be fixed first before I can approve? ミラP@Miraclepine 22:57, 6 March 2026 (UTC)
Oh, I see they're fixed (didn't notice this earlier since I usually don't watch reviewed DYK noms. With one minor fix done, I'll mark this as approved, especially for DYKAPRIL. ミラP@Miraclepine 13:48, 9 March 2026 (UTC)

I completely oppose ALT0c, of course, as the article is not for the song. I believe ALT1 or a variation would be much better for this article than just listing companies that used it. Skyshiftertalk 17:42, 9 March 2026 (UTC)

I personally would do something like
ALT2: ... that this is not a Rickroll?
          Skyshiftertalk 18:09, 9 March 2026 (UTC)
          • I don't think ALT2 would work. WP:DYKAPRIL states that all hooks must be truthful, and this is the opposite. I also believe "this is a rickroll" would be equally funny as "this is not a rickroll"; either way, the joke is the same, as it is obvious that the link is a rickroll. — Vigilant Cosmic Penguin 🐧(talk | contribs) 20:32, 9 March 2026 (UTC)
An actual rickroll would be ALT3: ... that you can download Radiohead's album In Rainbows here?, although perhaps you'd want something that doesn't only tickle fans of that band.--Launchballer 08:51, 15 March 2026 (UTC)
I think it would be very difficult to manage an actual rickroll in a DYK hook—least of all because a cryptic link on April Fool's Day will make people expect a rickroll. It requires a statement that fits the format, has some connection to the article, and will actually get clicks. That's part of why I was hoping to (eventually) bring this to FA. My idea is that the April Fool's main page will display a completely different TFA, but all the links will lead to this instead. I believe a TFA would be a much more awesome prank as there's more certainty that people will click on it.
My ALT0 hook was intended to strike a balance between being kind of a rickroll, and still being a solid fact for a normal DYK day. The hook doesn't use the word "rickroll", so readers might be amused by the link target. But this angle would only work if it's not April Fool's Day, so it's less obvious. — Vigilant Cosmic Penguin 🐧(talk | contribs) 06:15, 19 March 2026 (UTC)
          • Given Vigilantcosmicpenguin's explanation about how the hook would work, and of course that ALT0d's clickbait function works so well, I'm fine with this being run at any time possible, though I'd recommend right before April Fools' Day or (since a huge chunk of our readers is hours awake after the GMT, as I can personally testify in my capacity as a long-time East Coast resident) the first April 2 queue. ミラP@Miraclepine 14:37, 20 March 2026 (UTC)

          • @MSK: Hi. I will be reviewing this. Thank you for this interesting article and the hook. Here are some quick suggestions which you can consider.

:*Using uniform date format, probably WP:MDY

          • Clean up the lead section from many references, as per MOS:LEAD, because it usually does not require references as it sums up the article body
             Done
          • An alternate hook just in case if it does not make to DYKAPRIL
ALT1: ... that the LA Metro released a shirt asking people to ride their D?
          • This could be a real world fact, but here is a little problem I faced in a few WP:INLINEs and therefore need your input. Reference #8 does not mention the terms "Downtown" or "Koreatown", can you please provide a better reference?
Done swapped out for a better reference.
@MSK: Maybe consider using this reference which explicitly mentions the terms "Downtown" and "Koreatown", by noting "The route between downtown Los Angeles and Koreatown is one of Metro's most heavily used". M. Billoo 02:21, 10 March 2026 (UTC)
          • Can you please show me the confirmation of was approved in 2012, I could not see it in reference #9?
For ref 9(now ref 3), it says In addition, the Metro Board approved the route and station locations for the first phase of the project and it was published in 2012.
          • Please change expected to be completed to scheduled to be completed, probably to generate NPOV.
             Done
          • It is written that described by multiple sources as "inappropriate". Probably, see WP:WEASEL, because it has a double quote mark for a word combined with a demand of multiple sources, but no INLINE or WP:INTEXT attributions are given ahead.
             Done
The T-shirt and crop top were described by multiple sources as inappropriate. Please remove this claim because it is still acting as WEASEL due to no attributions. Rest of the article seems OK now. M. Billoo 02:01, 10 March 2026 (UTC)
I have also done some minor touchups as per MOS. Thank you! M. Billoo 22:29, 8 March 2026 (UTC)
@M.Billoo2000: these points should be addressed, thank you for the review! monkeysmashingkeyboards (talk) 01:21, 10 March 2026 (UTC)
Should be actually done now. Cheers! monkeysmashingkeyboards (talk) 02:27, 10 March 2026 (UTC)
@MSK: Thank you and all the best. ALT3 can definitely be WP:QUIRKY only if the original one could not make it to DYKAPRIL. M. Billoo 03:43, 10 March 2026 (UTC)
