Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors

Wikimedia project page for Main Page error reporting From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

To report an error in content currently or imminently to appear on Main Page, use the appropriate section below. Reports should contain:

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation using {{!xt}} of the text in question helps.
  • Offer a correction if possible using {{xt}}.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 18:54 on 16 March 2026) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
  • Actual errors only. Failures of subjective criteria such as taste are not errors.
  • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
  • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed or determined not to be an error, or the item has been rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

Paralympics
  • In the first blurb "The Winter Paralympics close in northern Italy.", I think conclude would be a better synonym to use here since the blurb is about the event ending. Furthermore, while I am not a grammar expert, but I believe the blurb is written with the subject (The Winter Paralympics) in third person, so I think the proper form for the verb, in this case, would be closes/concludes. I may be wrong though. ~2026-16552-33 (talk) 12:40, 16 March 2026 (UTC)
@~2026-16552-33: As the link for the verb in the sentence points to the 2026 Winter Paralympics closing ceremony article, "close" seems the correct choice. "The Winter Paralympics" is the sentence's subject, so it's written as first-person third-person plural; "closes" would be incorrect. Bazza 7 (talk) 12:57, 16 March 2026 (UTC)
No, it is written as a third-person plural (they), not a first-person plural (we); but Bazza 7 is right that "close" is correct. One might conceivably instead consider the Paralympics as a singular collective noun, but I think the idea is that it stands for Paralympic Games, so the plural does sound better, at least to my British ears. JMCHutchinson (talk) 14:30, 16 March 2026 (UTC)
To my American ear, it would be "Paralympics closes" but "Paralympic Games close". --User:Khajidha (talk) (contributions) 14:34, 16 March 2026 (UTC)

@Jmchutchinson: Thanks for the correction. Too much nerdiness on my part. Corrected above. Bazza 7 (talk) 14:47, 16 March 2026 (UTC)
As a BrE speaker, I agree with the OP that 'conclude' would be more idiomatic. The closing ceremony and the conclusion of the games are two distinct concepts - the games conclude with the closing ceremony. However 'close' is still comprehensible, so if this is an ENGVAR difference it's not worth changing. Modest Genius talk 14:44, 16 March 2026 (UTC)
Disagree. It's called a "closing ceremony". No need for any change.   Amakuru (talk) 18:52, 16 March 2026 (UTC)
