Wikipedia:WikiProject Espionage

There is a lot of confusion about the difference between "intelligence" and "espionage." Here it is:

• The Intelligence field is the top-level field, and it involves spies, analysts, case officers, briefers, and all of the other people who relate to intelligence.
• Intelligence is the information collected.
• Espionage is the specific subfield of intelligence involving spies who collect intelligence. People who do not collect intelligence are not called spies.

We get the word "espionage" from French, and in French, there is also a distinction: Espionage is the same, and Intelligence is translated as "Renseignement."

An analyst or policymaker who works in intelligence analysis or intelligence assessment, for example, works in the intelligence field, but these people are not spies, and they do not work in espionage.

• Drocj (talk · contribs) - As an architectural designer, my skills hopefully lend to organizing information for efficiency, readability, clarity & consistency.
