The World Destubathon

You are invited to participate in The World Destubathon. It's currently planned for June 16-July 13, partly due to me having hayfever during that period and not wanting to run it throughout July or August in the hotter summer and will be run then unless multiple editors object. There is currently $3338 going into it, with $500 the top prize. As 250 countries and entities is too much to patrol, entries will be by user, but there is $500 going into prizes for editors covering the most countries. Sign up if interested! ♦ Dr. Blofeld

Apparent contradiction between articles

Genocides in history (1946 to 1999)#1971 war states, "An academic consensus holds that the events that took place during the Bangladesh Liberation War constituted genocide." (The cited source, , does support that, saying, "A consensus has formed among scholars that genocides in the twentieth century encompassed (although were not limited to) the following cases: ... Bangladesh in 1971 ....")

However, Bangladesh genocide states as the last paragraph in the lead, "Allegations of a genocide in Bangladesh were rejected by most UN member states at the time and rarely appear in textbooks and academic sources on genocide studies." (And the cited source, The Problems of Genocide: Permanent Security and the Language of Transgression, pp. 8 and 395, does support that, saying, "Bengalis seeking to carve out Bangladesh from Pakistan in 1971 said the government's repression was genocidal, while scholars thought they saw 'selective genocide' in Burundi a year later, and in attacks on Paraguayan Indians soon thereafter. None of these cases became generally recognized as genocide; they rarely appear in university syllabi and textbooks on the subject." (page 395))

The article later states, "The genocide is also mentioned in some publications outside the subcontinent; for example, The Guinness Book of Records lists the atrocities as one of the largest five genocides in the twentieth century." If we have to cite Guinness World Records as a source, that's not a particularly reliable source and certainly not academic; WP:GUINNESS indicates that it is considered marginally reliable.

Hence, these two Wikipedia articles appear to disagree as to whether there is a scholarly consensus that a genocide occurred in Bangladesh in 1971, and each has an apparently reliable source to cite for its position. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 20:32, 17 January 2026 (UTC)
