Symbolism of the village pump metaphor

What is the etymology of using "village pump" as a general discussion place on Wikipedia? I assume it's because in the past, a whole community of people lined up to use a physical village pump, and used that time to talk to each other. That's correct. On Commons – the repository of media files used by Wikipedia – the Village pump page is decorated with photos of literal village pumps. —⁠andrybak (talk) 21:07, 11 June 2024 (UTC)

A more modern (and perhaps more understandable) metaphor could be "watercooler", but I guess this works too. 🙂 Ravilov (talk) 14:45, 7 September 2025 (UTC)

All is not all

The Wikipedia:Village pump (all) page should just join together the six VP pages into one big page. It does include four of them, but fails to include Wikipedia:Village pump (idea lab) and Wikipedia:Village pump (WMF). It just displays a link to them. I have checked the code in VP (all) and it seems to correctly transclude all six VP pages in exactly the same way. I have also checked each of the six VP pages and all seem to have the same valid noinclude tags. Any idea what is going wrong? — GhostInTheMachine ^{talk to me} 09:32, 12 September 2025 (UTC)

Just been testing stuff ... The joined version is simply going to be too large and so "some" templates are not expanded. It is seemingly random that it leaves out #4 and #5 of 6 — GhostInTheMachine ^{talk to me} 09:36, 12 September 2025 (UTC)

I recently moved one discussion from WP:VPM to WP:VPP because we have some guidelines about especially LLMs, like this one here, which is now under discussion for change. Furthermore, there are a few other rules about (mis)use of AI explained at WP:AI. I'm now worried that more AI-related discussions would be posted at WP:VPM. If we can't tell users to use WP:VPP for such matters, then what else to do about AI-related discussions? WP:VPPR and WP:VPT.... Well, the "proposals" subpage wouldn't be appropriate... unless a proposal can determine which one is AI and which isn't? George Ho (talk) 19:30, 16 March 2026 (UTC)
