Merge Hong Kong and Macau as Chinese cities in concert dates
Since Hong Kong was handover from the UK to China on 1 July ‘97 and Macau from Portugal to China on 20 December ‘99, would it be OK to leave them as Chinese cities from those key dates to not confuse them as city-states when it’s about concert dates? MagnoVII (talk) 18:15, 8 March 2026 (UTC)
- @Livelikemusic, Binksternet, and NegativeMP1: I would like to see your thoughts on this. HorrorLover555 (talk) 20:38, 8 March 2026 (UTC)
- First thing is to follow the style seen in the sources. If that isn't present, then we should try to name and link the cities without naming the country. Hong Kong and Macau did not suddenly get erased at the end of the 20th century to become standardized as Chinese in every aspect—they continue to have characteristic local practices and traditions. Binksternet (talk) 20:56, 8 March 2026 (UTC)
- It’s true that are leave two decades from they’ve left being “special administrative regions”, but until that, they’re still part of China, although they don’t work like the rest of Chinese cities, and for more that the time is passing, Beijing is taking more control on Hong Kong and Macau, so I see better to change Macau and Hong Kong as Chinese cities when it’s about concert dates. MagnoVII (talk) 09:28, 9 March 2026 (UTC)
- I disagree. While both are Special Administrative Regions to China, both Hong Kong and Macau are under the principle of "one country, two systems", in which they have their own currencies and legal systems that are different from mainland China's. Whereas Hong Kong has their own currency apart from the Yuan, as well as Macau maintaining a different system, as well as their own currency (the Macanese Pataca, similar to how Hong Kong has their own dollar). HorrorLover555 (talk) 17:28, 9 March 2026 (UTC)
- Although what you say is not false, with the passage of time, Hong Kong and Macau are increasingly becoming merely Chinese cities, and there are only two decades left before, theoretically, they stop being under the “one country, two systems” principle. MagnoVII (talk) 00:53, 12 March 2026 (UTC)
- Then it would make sense to keep with the principle they are adhering to until it expires in those two decades. However, that doesn't mean that we should change them to cities under China right away in past concert tour articles, considering that in future tense, should the principles expire, the use of China as a country for both Hong Kong (2047 for its current expiration date, although there is talk that the principle there is indefinite) and Macau (currently set to expire at the end of 2049, although again, can be extended in question) in future concert tour articles would make sense. HorrorLover555 (talk) 02:14, 12 March 2026 (UTC)
- Although they have a certain degree of autonomy, they are not sovereign because they were returned to China by the United Kingdom and Portugal almost thirty years ago. And if I were travelling, I would include them as part of China, although I would be aware and highlight that they are not like other Chinese cities. And their destiny is set to become Chinese cities, not city-states. MagnoVII (talk) 08:48, 12 March 2026 (UTC)
- Again, the "one country, two systems" principle still applies to them until their expiration on said dates unless extended. "
Hong Kong and Macau did not suddenly get erased at the end of the 20th century to become standardized as Chinese in every aspect
" as Binksternet has said, so we need to follow the standards of the principle until its expiration in both Hong Kong and Macau.
