In an unsourced update to St John's Church, Goole, @Wikijohnword: said the architects were "William Hurst and W. B. Moffat". NHLE agrees. Hurst has since been amended to William Hurst (architect), a red link. I thought I'd found our man Moffat as William Bonython Moffatt (right initial, plausible dates, worked with George Gilbert Scott), but ... the Dictionary of Scottish Architects shows the church as by William Hurst and William Lambie Moffatt/Moffat. The Friends of Doncaster Mansion House have a page "Doncaster Architects: William Hurst" about an architect born 1787, which says that in 1838 he "entered into partnership with a Scotsman, William Lambie Moffatt. This period has less local interest as much of the practice’s work involved churches and public buildings elsewhere."

Has anyone got a copy of Pevsner covering Goole which might have something to say, or any other information about our redlinked architects here?

William Lambie Moffatt isn't redlinked anywhere but shows up in a search as architect of six buildings which have articles, and another when he's spelled with just the one "t" as "Moffat".

Ahah: just found this which credits Moffatt with the church at Goole! So NHLE and the church archives have got it wrong? All a puzzle. There's another bio of him here which identifies a lot of his workhouses, hospitals and schools but unfortunately doesn't identify his churches! PamD 15:24, 2 February 2024 (UTC)

Apologies for the lack of source material, this was largely taken from newspaper archives of Goole Times giving a history of the church throughout the years, particularly that from 25 years ago commemorating the 150th anniversary of the church. Wikijohnword (talk) 15:31, 2 February 2024 (UTC)

Please note that there is a group of worthy volunteers aiming to delete all copyright violations on Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. See WP:COPYVIO They may assume that any text in a public place is copyright and therefore cannot be shown. This can apply to information notices and commemorative plaques. A deletion request has therefore been placed on the June Hancock plaque

(#189 on List of Leeds Civic Trust plaques) which could potentially apply to all the Trust's plaques. I wrote to the trust and received the following answer from Amy Sutcliffe, their Communications Officer.

"We really appreciate all the pictures of our plaques on Wikimedia Commons and indeed make use of them (with the appropriate credit!) for social media posts and the like where we lack our own images. The plaques are owned by us, but they exist to promote public education on Leeds’ history and heritage. The text is not copyrighted, and we would be devastated if your fantastic collection of images were removed. There is absolutely no reason from us for you to remove the images. There is no copyright issue here – they are photographs of an artefact in a public place."

This may also affect plaques put up by different organisations across our area, particularly the more informative ones Chemical Engineer (talk) 15:36, 18 January 2025 (UTC)

@Chemical Engineer The problem is that, in the UK, all text is copyright without having to be "copyrighted". If the trust could put a permissions notice on their website to state that all text on their blue plaques may be freely copied ... (check exact wording), which you could link to when uploading the images, that might satisfy the Copyvio hawks: might be worth checking with them first. It's a bit like the restriction on including photos of pub signs: copyright law is weird, but WP needs to be sure to stay legal. Good luck with it all. PamD 17:39, 19 January 2025 (UTC)

I am not just raising this as a problem for me to deal with, but a warning for all, that years of work and irreplaceable historic images could be lost by someone taking the view that all text is copyright unless very particular steps are taken to say it is not by the originator (not the photographer) who may even not exist any more. (As societies and councils change - e.g, with change of boundary. I hope that Leeds Civic Trust can stave off the attack on their public plaques which are there to be seen. However, you may be taking pictures in another area which could be deleted. Is there anything you can do in advance? Hello, just for information there is a significant number of "Harv and Sfn no-target errors" that have appeared on articles, particularly on list articles of Listed Buildings. The links do actually work so no action is required. It is caused by a security patch that has been applied to the software and affects harv links with a space or underscore in the author name.
