George J. Benston

George J. Benston studierte Wirtschaftswissenschaft zunächst am Queens College, wo er 1952 den Bachelorgrad erwarb. Er setzte anschließend sein Studium an der New York University fort. Dort legte er 1953 die Magisterprüfung ab. An der University of North Carolina absolvierte er 1955 als Wirtschaftsprüfer ab. Während seines Studiums hatte er auf die Gebiete der Wirtschaftsprüfung und das Steuerwesen konzentriert. Von 1958 bis 1958 war er zunächst Assistenzprofessor an der Georgia State University und von 1962 bis 1966 an der University of Chicago, wo er 1963 zum Ph.D. promovierte. Bis 1969 arbeitete er als außerordentlicher Professor an der University of Rochester und seit 1976 als ordentlicher Professor. 1987 übernahm er eine Professur an der Emory University (Goizueta Business School). Seine wissenschaftlichen Schwerpunkte als Hochschullehrer waren die Wirtschaftsprüfung und die Finanzwissenschaft. Gastprofessuren hatte Benston an der University of California, Berkeley, der London School of Economics and Political Science und mehrmals an der Hebräischen Universität Jerusalem inne.

2002 erhielt Benston gemeinsam mit anderen den Adam-Smith-Preis.
