Paul E. Farmer

Paul E. Farmer studierte Medizinische Anthropologie an der Duke University und erwarb dort 1982 den Bachelorgrad. Anschließend arbeitete er längere Zeit als Freiwilliger in einem Krankenhaus in Haiti. An der Harvard Medical School bzw. der Harvard University legte er 1990 die Magisterprüfung ab und promovierte im gleichen Jahr dort zum Ph.D. auf dem Gebiet der Medizinischen Anthropologie. Bis zu seinem frühen Tod in Ruanda lehrte er als Professor an der Harvard Medical School auf dem Gebiet Sozialmedizin und Globale Gesundheit. Farmer gehörte 1987 zu den Mitbegründern der internationalen Hilfsorganisation "Partners in Health" und hielt sich oft zu Einsätzen in den ärmeren Ländern der Welt auf, oft auch in Zusammenarbeit mit der World Health Organization bzw. den Vereinten Nationen, u. a. in Haiti. Er beschäftigte sich vor allem mit Epidemien und Krankheiten wie AIDS und Ebola und machte sich für den Einsatz von medizinischer Hilfe in der Dritten Welt stark. Farmer war Mitglied der American Academy of Arts and Sciences und erhielt die Public Welfare Medal der National Academy of Sciences und wurde für sein Wirken von zahlreichen Universitäten vor allem in den USA mit der Ehrendoktorwürde ausgezeichnet.
