Theodor Gaster

Theodor Herzl Gaster war ein Sohn des Rabbiners und Folkloristen Moses Gaster, sein Vater war ein Freund von Theodor Herzl. Er studierte an der University of London und erlangte 1928 einen M.A. in Archäologie des Vorderen Orients. Gaster ging 1940 in die USA und wurde an der Columbia University promoviert. Er war verheiratet mit Lotta Gaster, sie hatten eine Tochter.

Gaster nahm Lehraufgaben an der Graduate School der Columbia University wahr und ab 1945 am Dropsie College in Philadelphia. Von 1946 bis 1950 war er Lecturer für Semitistik an der New York University, arbeitete in der Folgezeit aber vorwiegend als Forscher. Er hatte Fulbright-Stipendien und gelegentliche Lehraufträge oder Gastprofessuren. Ab 1966 war er Professor für Religionswissenschaften am Barnard College und von 1971 bis 1981 Professor an der Dropsie University. Gaster war 1956 einer der ersten Übersetzer der Schriftrollen vom Toten Meer ins Englische. Er überarbeitete 1959 die Kurzfassung des Werks The Golden Bough (1922) von James George Frazer.
