Beka, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Beka is a village located in the Swabi District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), Pakistan. The village is known for its historical roots, Pashtun tribal heritage, religious scholarship, and a strong tradition of community welfare, education, and social harmony.

The village of Beka was founded by Nawab Nehmat Khan of the Taju Khel sub-tribe of the Yousafzai Pashtuns. According to local historical accounts, Nawab Nehmat Khan settled in the area alongside members of other clans, collectively establishing and آباد (abaad) the settlement that later became known as Beka.

Oral history further suggests that an earlier settlement, sometimes referred to as Old Beka, existed near the Indus River and was submerged several centuries ago due to changes in the river’s course. Following this event, new villages emerged in the surrounding region, including Beka, Beka Dari, Nabi, Salah, and Haryan.

Beka lies within the fertile plains of the Swabi region, historically influenced by the Indus River system. The area supports agriculture and rural livelihoods and forms part of a network of closely connected villages in the district.

Beka is home to several Pashtun clans and other longstanding communities that have lived together for generations. The principal communities include:

• Khattak
• Bacha Sahib
• Hasan Khel
• Balarkhel
• Mughal
• Sayyid, including families identifying with the Bukhari or Naqvi traditions

The Bukhari or Naqvi Sayyid families form part of the longstanding social and religious fabric of Beka. Members of these families have maintained connections with the village for several generations and have participated in its religious, charitable, educational, and social life. Local family traditions associate members of the community with the establishment and support of a mosque and with charitable activities in the village.

The Bukhari Sayyid tradition in South Asia is historically associated with the Sufi figure Hazrat Sayyid Jalaluddin Surkh-Posh Bukhari, whose lineage is traditionally identified with the Naqvi Sayyid tradition. His descendants and the wider Bukhari family tradition have historical associations with different regions of present-day Pakistan, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Over successive generations, members of Beka's Bukhari or Naqvi Sayyid families have also moved to other parts of Pakistan and abroad. Members of families originating from the community have pursued careers in fields including medicine, higher education, religious scholarship, teaching, public service, business, and other professions, while maintaining social and familial connections with Beka.

Inter-clan cooperation, shared customs, religious institutions, charitable activities, and collective responsibility form important aspects of the social foundation of the village. The different clans, Sayyid families, and other resident communities have contributed to the religious, social, educational, and cultural life of Beka.
