High school marks a new journey for Cory Matthews and Shawn Hunter. Feeling nervous, the duo seek advice from Eric, who badgered them with a notebook full of information, however, it is under the condition that Cory avoids Eric at all costs. Shawn and Cory see new happiness now that they no longer have to deal with Mr. Feeny as their teacher, but feel scared about a notorious bully named Harley Keiner. Not put down by this, Cory and Shawn walk the halls of John Adams High and bump into a teacher, who they mistake as for Harley. It is then clarified that the teacher they met is a new teacher— Jonathan Turner, who immediately earns a reputation for being a cool teacher, and described by Cory and Shawn as "Feeny with an earring." After class, Cory crosses paths with the real Harley Keiner and after making small talk, immediately gets threatened. Harley lets Cory off the hook, but catches the attention of another teacher, who sends Harley and Cory ("Johnny Baboon") to the principal's office. Feeling like his high school experience couldn't get worse, Cory is shocked to find out that Mr. Feeny has been promoted to high school principal. Feeny lets Cory off the hook and gives Harley detention. Next, Harley blames Cory for his punishment and orders him to face him after school so that he can get beat up. Initially, Cory fakes an injury at nurse's, but decides to have dignity and face Harley. In the midst of their confrontation, Eric interjects causing Harley to attack them both. However, Mr. Turner steps in, tells Harley to release them.

Cory seems puzzled after everyone at school seems to be "pairing off" with each other, and starting to date. He goes to Shawn for advice and gets told that he needs to make himself more vulnerable and attractive. After this, Shawn pairs off with a fellow student, so Cory becomes determined to find a partner. He turns to Topanga, but gets pushed out of the way, after another student notices Topanga's attractiveness and beautiful hair. And after several attempts to get noticed, Cory decides to get advice from Eric. Meanwhile, Eric has an attractive study partner named Rebecca, and decides to make a move on her while Amy and Alan are at Morgan's soccer practice. They make out, eventually going to Amy and Alan's bedroom. While getting intimate, Cory interrupts them, scaring Rebecca off. Then, Cory seeks advice from Eric on "how to get a girl to say hi," and after using his methods gets a date with a girl, but fails to catch her name. Elsewhere, Amy and Alan discover Eric and Rebecca's rendezvous in their bedroom after finding an earring, and punish Eric while also giving Cory the proper advice. Cory sees the girl who he paired off with— Wendy. He asks her out on a date, saying that they should get to know each other.

Seeking to establish a reputation at school, Shawn alters the headline of the school newspaper to mock the new principal, renaming Mr. Feeny "Principal Weeny." The student body is highly amused by the practical joke, but an outraged Feeny visits every classroom demanding the culprit confess. Shawn remains silent and escalates his pranks by altering the nameplate on Feeny's office door. Cory is subsequently summoned to the principal's office after Janitor Bud reports seeing him near the scene with an unidentified accomplice. Although Cory maintains his innocence, Feeny holds him responsible and issues an ultimatum: name the true perpetrator or face suspension. Terrified of the consequences, Cory seeks guidance from his parents, Amy and Alan, who offer conflicting advice on whether he should protect his friend or save himself. The following day, Mr. Turner explains to Cory that Feeny's severe reaction stems from a fear that the jokes will undermine his authority as a newly appointed principal. During his disciplinary meeting, Cory decides to take the blame to protect Shawn, whose parents have threatened to send him to military school if he gets into trouble again. While Feeny is unamused in his administrative capacity, he recognizes Cory's integrity and loyalty as his neighbor and teacher. He waives the suspension, opting to give Cory detention instead. During the post-credits scene, Shawn accidentally exposes his own involvement in front of Feeny. Rather than punishing him immediately, Feeny promises to keep a close eye on Shawn for the remainder of high school

Meanwhile, Eric experiences a crisis regarding his social status. He begins courting a cool high school senior named Desiree, who manipulates his desperation for approval and quickly reduces him to her personal servant.

The Grapes of Wrath is taught by Mr. Turner to Cory and Shawn's class. Annoyed by the students' negative response to his non-traditional teaching methods, Turner makes a deal: if they read the novel and actively engage in a class discussion, the scheduled test will be cancelled. Word of Turner's alternative methodology soon reaches Mr. Feeny, who expresses his dismay, arguing that students fail to absorb knowledge without the stakes of formal assessment. Turner firmly disagrees, prompting the two educators to place a bet on whose instructional philosophy is superior. However, Turner ultimately decides to renege on his promise, presenting the class with the unannounced exam anyway. Feeling inspired by the labor struggles and themes of collective bargaining detailed in the Steinbeck novel, Cory and Shawn organize and lead their classmates on a student "strike". The students stage a walkout, marching out of Turner's classroom and occupying the school cafeteria to demand steak and lobster. The protest is abruptly halted when Mr. Feeny intervenes, threatening to cancel all extracurricular school activities. Intimidated by the administrative consequences, the rest of the student body abandons the strike and returns to class, leaving only Shawn standing loyally behind Cory. Cory continues his march completely out of the school building, while Shawn ultimately opts to stay behind since he does not participate in any school activities to begin with. At home, Cory & Shawn face punishment from Cory's parents for walking out. However, Mr. Turner arrives at the Matthews residence to take full responsibility for mishandling the class pact, while explaining to Cory & Shawn that students cannot realistically strike. Cory, Shawn, and Turner later visit Mr. Feeny in his backyard to apologize.

Meanwhile, Jason and Eric's friendship is tested when Eric's new girlfriend, Desiree, attempts to drive a wedge between them so she can monopolize Eric's attention. Realizing her manipulative behavior, Eric chooses to stand by his best friend and breaks up with Desiree.

Among those is Cory who, after seeing several people get rejected, has low hopes for himself. Much to his surprise, however, Melissa hands him an invitation to her party. More surprising is that Shawn, who is clearly more well-known and popular than Cory, was not invited, and after talking with Melissa, Cory finds out that not inviting Shawn was intentional. In the moment, Cory feels cool slick and decides to go to the party even though Shawn is clearly bothered. Upon his arrival to the party, it is unraveled that it is a "geek party." Melissa explains to Cory that all of the cool guys that she invited were not approved by her parents, causing her girlfriends not show up, and eventually the rest of the student body. Cory seems puzzled, but Melissa tells him that parents love him, much to his annoyance and horror. A fellow student arrives and invites Melissa to a "cool party," and she ditches Cory and her own party. Cory decides to leave and goes to Chubbie's and runs into Mr. Turner, who in turn explains to Cory the true meaning of friendship. It's the night of the Halloween party, and Cory decides to blow off the party that he, Shawn, and Topanga are going to since he's allegedly turning into a werewolf. Shawn fails to understand what his friend means so Cory tells him his story in a flashback. Previously, Cory had been taking out the garbage and ran into Mr. Feeny, who told him that a wolf had escaped from the local zoo and may be loose in their area. However, in the bushes, Cory hears a mysterious noise and gets "bitten" by the unidentified figure. The next morning, he feels that he had been growing hair in weird places, and consoles his doubts in Eric, who toys with his mind and tells him that he's turning into a werewolf. Cory decides to skip Turner's class to go to a fortune teller named Madame Ouspenskaya. She tells him various events will occur to show his transition from man to werewolf. And after these events come true, she tells him the final prophecy will occur when he kills the only woman who cares about him— Topanga. On the night of the party, Topanga goes to Cory's room to see if he's ready, but is shooed away. However, she refuses to believe his so-called transition, so she tells Cory that there is no curse and that she cares about him. Then, Cory and Topanga reveal their feelings for each other and kiss. In the post-credits, Feeny tells Cory that the wolf that escaped has been a hoax, since it had merely escaped from its habitat and went to another place in the zoo. Feeling relieved, Cory checks the bush where he heard the "wolf," and finds out that it was a cute rabbit. However, the rabbit growls at Cory, scaring him inside the house. Meanwhile, Alan and Amy are searching all the soda cans after hearing that a robbery took place, and the robber hid the stolen jewelry in a soda can.

After repeatedly failing to secure dates for an upcoming school dance, Cory and Shawn mope around at Chubbie's. Their luck seemingly changes when a patron asks them to watch his guitar for a few moments, prompting a group of impressed girls to mistake the duo for actual rock musicians. Realizing the romantic potential of the misunderstanding, Cory and Shawn lean into the deception and decide to form a fakeband so that they can impress girls. They hold humorous, non-musical tryouts and recruit two classmates, including a boy named Thor, who possess no musical talent but excel at striking stereotypical rock star poses. Cory enforces a strict rule to protect the charade: the band must never actually play a single note. The plan backfires when the scheduled band for the school dance the Demon Seeds, abruptly cancels. Driven by the enthusiastic demands of Cory and Shawn's adoring fans, Acting Principal Mr. Feeny officially books the boys' fake band as the night's entertainment. Panicking, Cory confesses to the fake members that he signed real performance contracts, prompting them to instantly quit. Desperate, Cory and Shawn hire a real local band to play hidden backstage while the duo lip-syncs and air-guitars on stage. However, they lack the money to pay the musicians, who walk out right before the set. Left alone on stage, Cory and Shawn frantically stall the audience by shouting generic rock concert questions to exploit the cheering crowd before finally admitting the truth.

Meanwhile, the boys' musical deception inspires Alan to reconnect with his youth and track down his former garage bandmates. While Alan is excited to recapture his glory days, he is disheartened to find that his old friends have fully embraced middle age and have absolutely no interest in living like young rock stars anymore, leaving him to grapple with his own feelings about growing older.

Cory and Shawn attend their first high school make-out party. Before leaving, Eric plays a cruel joke on Cory by deliberately instilling a deep anxiety about dating etiquette, grilling him with absurd scenarios regarding how to interact with girls. At the party, Cory panics and attempts to leave, but Shawn convinces him to stay. The partygoers begin playing "seven minutes in heaven" a game where couples are randomly selected to spend seven minutes together inside a dark closet. To his relief and horror, Cory is chosen alongside Topanga. Due to the performance anxiety fueled by Eric's teasing, Cory is too terrified to initiate a kiss. Understanding his distress, Topanga kindly offers to just spend the time talking with him instead. However, word of the uneventful closet session spreads, and Cory becomes the laughingstock of the school for failing to kiss her. Dejected and believing his social life is permanently ruined, Cory tells his parents about the humiliation. Amy and Alan blame Eric for causing the psychological block and place a strict embargo on Eric's own social life: Eric is forbidden from going on any future dates until he helps restore Cory's confidence. Desperate to lift his own punishment, Eric sets up a double date to help Cory overcome his stage fright. While the date initially triggers more anxiety for Cory, he ultimately learns to trust himself and gains a newfound sense of confidence.

Cory agrees and practices his new, gentlemanly demeanor at school by greeting Mr. Feeny and holding doors open for his classmates. When he accidentally bumps into a cute girl named T.K. and politely helps her pick up her dropped belongings, she interprets his kindness as a sign of unique charm and quickly becomes infatuated with him. At first, Cory is thrilled to be in a romantic relationship, especially when the school bully, Harley Keiner, and his lackeys begin treating him with unusual respect. However, T.K. rapidly becomes incredibly aggressive and intense, filling the Matthews' living room with overwhelming gifts, including wreaths, sirloin steaks, and a life-sized candy clown. Sensing that the relationship is moving too fast, Cory tries to break up with her. T.K. takes the rejection poorly, and Cory is horrified to discover that "T.K." stands for Theresa Keiner—Harley Keiner's younger sister. A furious Harley corners Cory for breaking his sister's heart and forces him to take Theresa on a nice, polite date to the drive-in theater, appointing his sidekick Frankie to act as a chaperone. Theresa, however, has no interest in a polite date. She quickly bribes Frankie with enough snack money to clear out the concession stand, sending him away so she can try to aggressively make out with Cory. The upcoming Sadie Hawkins-style "Turnaround Dance" at John Adams High—where girls are traditionally expected to ask boys out—leaves Cory experiencing deep anxiety over his personal social standing. Cory firmly believes that the social status of whichever girl asks him will reflect his own popularity at school. He initially approaches Topanga, but she declines to attend, explaining that she finds the concept of a specific turnaround dance inherently sexist and noting that her father is taking her out of town for a Christmas shopping trip. Later, while daydreaming about being asked by one of the school's most popular girls, a distracted Cory accidentally accepts an invitation from Ingrid Iverson, an unpopular and conventionally unappealing classmate. Regretting his mistake, Cory tries to craft an excuse to back out of the date. However, Alan strictly reprimands him for his superficiality and insists that he honor his commitment. Eric also warns Cory that ditching a girl will ruin his reputation among all the female students. Seeking a compromise, Cory teams up with Shawn and Shawn's popular date to give Ingrid a dramatic physical and social makeover before the dance. The plan succeeds all too well: Ingrid becomes highly attractive and popular overnight. Ironically, upon realizing her newfound social currency at the dance, Ingrid instantly dumps Cory for a more popular boy, leaving him to face the exact rejection he feared.

However, the station's lunch hour broadcast—co-hosted by Mr. Feeny and consisting of old-fashioned music—is widely considered incredibly boring by the student body. When Mr. Turner challenges them to get on the air and do a better job, Cory and Shawn take over the broadcast. They initially struggle under Mr. Feeny's rigid script, which restricts them to dull topics like upcoming school bake sales. Desperate to capture their peers' attention, the duo abandons the script and launches a provocative, high-energy matchmaking show titled "Lunchtime Lust". An outraged Mr. Feeny deems the shock-jock program to be in poor taste, officially banning the show and stripping the boys of their broadcasting privileges. Shawn experiences an emotional crisis and becomes deeply disheartened after a girl named Jill dumps him solely because of his family's financial struggles and living situation. Internalizing the rejection, Shawn begins to believe he is destined to be nothing more than "trailer trash." He distances himself from Cory and attempts to shift his social circle by joining Harley Keiner's gang of high school thugs. To prove his allegiance to Harley, Shawn acts out by flooding a school hallway. Much to the dismay of Cory and Mr. Turner, Shawn embraces an "internship" under Harley, skipping classes to loiter in the parking lot. Cory and Mr. Turner frantically try to intervene, forcing Shawn to confront the reality that his self-worth and future are determined by his choices, not his economic status. Turner successfully diffuses a tense confrontation between Harley and Cory, ultimately pulling Shawn back from the wrong path.

Realizing he cannot skate, Eric seeks help from his best friend, Jason. While Eric is asleep, he experiences a vivid, surreal dream sequence where he receives a personal, professional skating lesson from Olympic figure skater Nancy Kerrigan who guest stars as herself. Cory and Shawn face academic trouble in Mr. Turner's English class after failing an assignment. Topanga asks Cory and Shawn to reflect on their past school year and name their biggest personal achievement for the school yearbook. Recognizing that they have accomplished absolutely nothing during their first year of high school, Cory experiences an identity crisis and yearns to make a name for himself. When a group of varsity athletes forcefully recruits Cory to fill a vacant lightweight slot on the high school wrestling team, Cory eagerly joins to secure a varsity jacket and elevate his social standing. While his father, Alan, is ecstatic over the athletic development, his mother, Amy, fiercely opposes the decision out of fear that Cory will be severely injured. The new trouble student, Griff Hawkins, and his lackeys use their extensive resources to capitalize on Cory's sudden athletic venture, hyping up his debut match into a massive, heavily marketed school spectacle. As the match approaches, a terrified Cory realizes he has nothing to prove and tries to back out, only to find the gym packed with an enormous crowd. Griff's theatrical promotion transforms the event into a professional-style wrestling match, featuring a special guest appearance by singer Robert Goulet to perform the national anthem, alongside a celebrity audience including Yasmine Bleeth and Frankie's real-life professional wrestler father, Vader (Leon White), guest starring as himself. Cory is forced into the ring against Joey, but the match takes a dangerous turn when Frankie is tagged in.
