Béjart Ballet

Since its founding in 1987, the Béjart Ballet Lausanne has established itself as an international reference in the world of dance. Heir to the innovative spirit of Maurice Béjart, the BBL continues its journey today under the artistic direction of Julien Favreau.

Once an emblematic soloist of Maurice Béjart’s repertoire, Julien Favreau, now artistic director, embodies the continuity of a visionary body of work while infusing it with a sensitive modernity firmly rooted in the present. Through his artistic vision, the company affirms its commitment to preserving the master’s legacy while opening up new choreographic horizons.

Faithful to Maurice Béjart’s wish to make dance accessible to all, the company performs on the world’s greatest stages, captivating ever-growing audiences with the expressive and universal power of its art. Its repertoire—at the heart of which are emblematic works such as The Rite of Spring, Boléro, The Ninth Symphony, and Ballet for Life — emains vibrant and alive.

From 2007 to 2024, Gil Roman, then Artistic Director of the BBL, enriched this repertoire with numerous creations and guided the company into a new era of transmission and renewal. The Béjart Ballet Lausanne opened its doors to guest choreographers from diverse backgrounds — Yuka Oishi, Valentina Turcu, Julio Arozarena, Tony Fabre, Christophe Garcia, Alonzo King, Giorgio Madia, Joost Vrouenraets, and Sthan Kabar-Louët — whose distinctive universes revealed the dancers’ versatility and further shaped the artistic identity of the BBL.

Today, under the artistic vision of Julien Favreau, the Béjart Ballet Lausanne remains a space of creation and transmission where the legacy of Maurice Béjart coexists with today’s choreographic voices. In this spirit of continuity, the company continues to invite internationally renowned choreographers, such as Andonis Foniadakis and the duo Riva&Repele, invited in December 2025.
