Some mainspace pages, such as set indices and soft redirects, are expected to be short and so are padded with long comment when 255 bytes or smaller to prevent them from cluttering the report generated by Special:Shortpages so it can more readily be used to find mainspace pages requiring attention (Note: Pages with the __DISAMBIG__ magic word are automatically excluded from the report and so are not padded). If a page has expanded to the point it would be 256 bytes or longer without any padding, {{short pages monitor}} and its accompanying comment can be removed. Usually this is done by User:Bot1058 (task 5). However, as long comment is always substituted and the verbiage of it has changed over time some pages retain long comments not conforming with the current string produced by {{subst:long comment}} and these may periodically need to be cleared manually.

It is considered best practice to check that the additional page content is acceptable when manually clearing; a formerly very short page that has suddenly grown to more than 560 characters can indicate a mass introduction of text that may not belong.
