A string instrument is a musical instrument that produces sound with vibrating strings amplified by one or more of three main methods:
- Vibration of a sounding board via a bridge
- Resonance of air in a sound box, often through a sound hole
- Electric pickup for an instrument amplifier driving a loudspeaker
