The settlement is named after Rodrigo de Fuentidueña, a Spaniard who emigrated from Cubagua Island to Margarita following the tsunami of 1541 and who became one of the earliest documented residents of the San Juan valley.[1]

History

An informal outpost is known to have existed on the site since 1533, used by Cubaguan settlers to collect fresh water from the local spring known as the chorrito e Fuentidueño.[1] After the 1541 tsunami and the French pirate raids of 1543 forced the abandonment of Cubagua, several Spanish families, including that of Rodrigo de Fuentidueña, settled permanently in the San Juan valley. Fuentidueña was later judged and condemned in Spain for having fathered children with an indigenous woman; the hamlet retained his name.

Geography

Fuentidueño sits in the upper section of the San Juan valley, on the southern slopes of Cerro Copey, at an elevation of approximately 250 m (820 ft). Surrounding land is dominated by date palm groves and small-plot (conuco) agriculture.

Culture

The hamlet is best known as the traditional centre of production of piñonate, a sweet made from green papaya and unrefined cane sugar (papelón). Together with the surrounding parish, it also produces date palm handicrafts (sombreros de cogollo, alpargatas and basketry) marketed throughout Margarita Island.
