Early life and background

Gojkomir Glogovac was born in Bileća. His father worked as a local tax official, providing a comfortable upbringing for the family. However, his father passed away when Gojkomir was still a child, leading to him being sent to military school in Sarajevo. He later completed his formal military education in Maribor.

Before the outbreak of World War I, Glogovac distinguished himself as an exceptional athlete, participating in cycling, fencing, swimming, shooting, and gymnastics. He also worked successfully as a non-commissioned officer instructor.

Military career

At the outbreak of World War I, Glogovac fought on the Serbian front, commanding a machine-gun section with the 2nd Bosnian-Herzegovinian Infantry Regiment during operations along the river Ljig and the Battle of Kolubara.

Following the Serbian campaign, he was transferred to the Italian Front, where he participated in the grueling Battles of the Isonzo and notably distinguished himself during the Battle of Monte San Michele. From mid-1918, he was deployed to the Albanian front.

For his extreme individual bravery and leadership in combat, he was awarded the Military Order of Maria Theresa in August 1917. This prestigious honor automatically elevated him to the rank of baron (Freiherr).

Post-war period

Following the end of World War I, Glogovac briefly joined the newly formed army of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. However, he soon left due to issues with military discipline and famously refused to take the oath of allegiance to King Peter I out of personal principle.

As a former high-ranking Austro-Hungarian officer, he faced difficulties under the new political administration and had his application for citizenship denied. He spent the remainder of his life in Budapest, Austria-Hungary, where he passed away on the 1st of March 1922. His cause of death was tuberculosis.
