Etymology and Commemoration
The lake is a "Geo-Memorial," part of a provincial initiative to name geographical features after service members from Saskatchewan who lost their lives in the line of duty.
The namesake, Master Corporal Byron Garth Greff (August 11, 1983 – October 29, 2011), was born in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. Greff was a highly skilled paratrooper and a member of the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) based in Edmonton, Alberta.
On October 29, 2011, during his second tour of duty, Greff was riding inside an armored NATO bus in Kabul when it was struck by a suicide bomber in an explosives-filled car. He was the first Canadian soldier to die during that specific training mission and the final Canadian fatality of the Afghanistan conflict.
Geography
Greff Lake is situated in the remote wilderness of northeastern Saskatchewan. The area is characterized by the rugged terrain of the Canadian Shield, consisting of dense coniferous forests, muskeg, and rock outcrops. Due to its location, the lake is primarily accessible by air or seasonal wilderness trails.
