Kent Removals & Storage is a subsidiary of Kent Relocation Group Pty Ltd, which also operates Kent Relocation Services for the corporate relocation market.[3] Now in its third generation of family ownership, the company is led by Executive Chairman Graham Kent and Non-Executive Director Wayne Kent.[1]
History
Founding and early years
Keith Landells Kent, a returned World War II veteran, established KL Kent Town and Country Removals in 1946 in the Melbourne suburb of Glen Iris, operating with a single converted ice truck and initial capital of 120 pounds.[4] He subsequently borrowed 10,000 pounds to purchase a property in Burke Road, Gardiner, where he opened a furniture shop, and established the company's first depot in Burwood on a 5,000 square metre block to service a fleet of five trucks.[4]
National expansion
Under the leadership of Graham Kent, son of the founder, the company expanded beyond Melbourne to establish a national presence. A new facility was acquired in Sydney, which played a role in supporting logistics for the 2000 Summer Olympics.[2] The company grew from a Melbourne-based operation into a national removals, storage, and relocation provider, adding corporate relocation services as a complementary business line.[1] At the time of a 2015 profile in SmartCompany, chief executive Timothy Irwin described the corporate services division as a "complementary extension" of Kent's core removalist and storage business.[1]
2010s and 2020s
In 2014, Kent Relocation Group acquired Watkins Removals and Storage, a Tasmanian removal firm established in the 1940s, with branches in Hobart and Launceston. The acquired business was rebranded as Watkins Kent Removals & Storage, and existing staff were retained. The launch was attended by Tasmanian State Treasurer Peter Gutwein.[5]
Between 2016 and 2018, the company invested in purpose-built facility upgrades in Sydney, Perth, Melbourne, and Brisbane, expanding capacity across its national network.[2] Kent also invested in a multi-million dollar facility in Townsville, quadrupling its footprint in the region and creating approximately 40 local construction jobs during the building phase.[6]
During the COVID-19 pandemic in Australia, Kent was classified as an essential service under transport and logistics exemptions, allowing continued operations during lockdown periods across Australian states. The company reported doubling its operational capacity during this period to meet increased demand for moving services.[7] In 2020, Kent secured its first major government contracts with the Northern Territory and Queensland governments.[2]
Operations
Kent Removals & Storage operates from approximately 20 branch locations across Australia, including Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Canberra, Darwin, Townsville, Newcastle, Hobart, Launceston, Albury, the Gold Coast, and the Sunshine Coast.[8]
The company's services include household furniture removals, interstate moving, international relocations, commercial and office relocations, and secure storage.[9] Kent offers a containerised storage service in which sealed containers are delivered to the customer's home, packed once, then collected and stored at Kent facilities.[6] Kent Relocation Group, the parent entity, also provides corporate relocation services including visa and immigration assistance, temporary accommodation, and property management through Kent Relocation Services.[3]
Awards and accreditation
Kent Removals & Storage won the ABA100 Service Excellence Award at the Australian Business Awards for six consecutive years, from 2012 to 2017. The award recognises organisations that have demonstrated leadership and commitment to customer service excellence.[10][11]
In 2018, Kent Relocation Services received the Commitment to Excellence Platinum Award, the highest-level supplier award, at the Cartus Corporation's Global Network Conference in Seattle.[12] Kent Relocation Services was also the first company in the Asia-Pacific region to receive the Graebel Consultant Choice Award.[13]
In 1999, Kent became the first Australian removal company to achieve the FIDI Accredited International Mover (FAIM) certification and ISO 9001 quality assurance accreditation, audited by Ernst & Young.[14] The company holds ISO 9001:2015 quality management certification and ISO 27001 information security certification.[14] Kent is a member of the Australian Furniture Removers Association (AFRA).[15]
