Early life and education

Lyuba Encheva (August 9, 1914 – August 4, 1989) was born in Sofia, the daughter of Nevena and Atanas Enchevi. The family was influenced by both Russian and Western European musical and cultural tradition, and at theage of six, she began playing the piano. Her mother, Nevena Encheva, was her first teacher - a graduate of the piano school of the Russian pianist Leshititsky and the Geneva Conservatory.

In 1924, at the age of only 10, Lyuba entered the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan where she studied piano with Italian professor Enzo Calace. She later advanced to study with Professor Ranzo Lorenzoni and at 16, she graduated with highest honors, becoming the youngest piano professor in Europe.
