Launched in September 2021, Capital IQ Pro consolidated capabilities from S&P Global's legacy Capital IQ and SNL Financial platforms.[2] The platform competes with Bloomberg Terminal, FactSet, and Refinitiv Eikon in the financial data services market.[3]
History
Company origins
In 2004, Standard & Poor's, then part of The McGraw-Hill Companies, acquired Capital IQ, a provider of financial information focused on company fundamentals and transaction data.[4][5]
In 2015, McGraw Hill Financial acquired SNL Financial for approximately $2.23 billion. SNL specialized in sector-specific financial data for banking, insurance, energy, and real estate industries.[6]
The two businesses were combined in 2016 under the S&P Global Market Intelligence brand.[7]
Platform launch and development
S&P Global Market Intelligence launched S&P Capital IQ Pro in September 2021, consolidating data and tools from its legacy platforms.[8]
Following S&P Global's $44 billion acquisition of IHS Markit in February 2022, selected datasets from IHS Markit were integrated into Capital IQ Pro, including country risk scores and macroeconomic indicators in 2023.[9][10]
In January 2023, the company acquired ChartIQ, a charting technology provider, and integrated its capabilities into the platform.[11]
S&P Global acquired Visible Alpha in May 2024.[12][13] Visible Alpha datasets, which provide analyst consensus estimates, became available within Capital IQ Pro in March 2025.[14]
Features and capabilities
Data coverage
Capital IQ Pro provides access to financial data across public and private markets. The platform covers over 100,000 public companies and more than 60 million private companies.[15][16] The platform includes company financials, market data, transactions, corporate structures, and industry-specific datasets.
Additional datasets are available through the S&P Global Marketplace.[17]
Technology and tools
The platform includes screening tools, financial modeling capabilities, and integration with Microsoft Office applications including Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.[18][19] Mobile applications are available for iOS and Android devices.[20]
In November 2024, S&P Global Market Intelligence introduced artificial intelligence features including Document Intelligence and ChatIQ, developed in partnership with Kensho Technologies. These features enable users to query documents such as regulatory filings using natural language prompts.[21][22]
Multi-Document ChatIQ, which extends analysis capabilities across multiple documents, was released in October 2025.[23]
Access and pricing
Capital IQ Pro is offered on a subscription basis. The platform is available as desktop software, web-based application, and mobile app. Pricing varies based on user requirements and licensed datasets, and is not publicly disclosed by S&P Global Market Intelligence.[24]
Market position and usage
Capital IQ Pro competes in the financial data services market with Bloomberg Terminal, FactSet, and Refinitiv Eikon. Industry analysis indicates the platform is commonly used by investment banking and private equity professionals, with particular emphasis on private company coverage and customizable financial analysis tools.[25][26]
Capital IQ is widely used by universities for teaching finance and investment analysis. Stanford University, Columbia University, New York University, and other institutions provide access to the platform for academic research and coursework.[27][28][29]
User reviews on software evaluation platforms highlight the platform's data visualization capabilities and Excel integration. Some reviews note a learning curve for new users and differences between the legacy platform and Capital IQ Pro.[30][31] In comparative reviews, users report that Capital IQ Pro excels in financial analysis and document search capabilities, achieving high ratings for data visualization and charting features.[32]
