James Ledward originally launched Scene as a small four-page insert called The Queer Guide.
In July 1995, The Queer Guide rebranded as GScene.
In 2021, GScene was rebranded as Scene. Scene dropped the G in 2021 to reflect a more diverse, modern, and inclusive community, moving beyond just the "gay scene" to better represent the LGBTQ+, trans, and non-binary community in Brighton and Hove.
Scene is widely known in the city for reporting on news, politics and culture for the queer community, and has served as a significant, 30-year archive of Brighton’s LGBTQ+ history.
