Sujoy Mandi is an Indian student rights activist, politician, and athlete. He is known for his leadership in student politics in West Bengal and his advocacy for Santhal student and tribal rights through the apolitical organization Bharat Jakat Santrah Pathua Gaunta (BJSPG).
Early life and education
Sujoy Mandi completed his secondary and higher secondary education at Howrah Zilla School, where he was also active as a meritorious student-athlete. He pursued his higher education at Goenka College of Commerce and Business Administration, earning both a Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) and a Master of Commerce (M.Com) degree.
Mandi expanded his academic and technical qualifications through multiple institutions, earning a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) from Baba Saheb Ambedkar Education University (BSAEU), a diploma from Rabindra Bharati University (RBU), and an ITI qualification from the Binpur-II Government ITI. Additionally, he completed specialised training in Computerised Accounting Software and Tally from the Howrah Youth Computer Training Centre.
Athletic career
During his youth, Mandi was an active football player in Howrah. He trained at the Dasnagar Yuva Sangha Club and participated in the Howrah District Club Tournament. He later advanced to play in the 5th Division of the Calcutta Football League (CFL).
Political and student activism
Trinamool Congress (2017–2022)
Mandi entered public life and student politics in 2017 by joining the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) in Ward No. 14 of Howrah. During this period, he engaged in local social work, organized public rallies, and advocated for the rights and economic justice of local street hawkers. As a youth-level leader, he initiated community outreach programs, including distributing essential examination tools and letters of encouragement to 10th and 12th-grade board examination candidates. Within student politics, he rose to become the Unit President of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) at Goenka College. He officially resigned from the TMC in 2022.
Bharat Jakat Santrah Pathua Gaunta (2023–2025)
In 2024, Mandi joined the Bharat Jakat Santrah Pathua Gaunta (BJSPG), an apolitical Santali students' organization. Operating within the Howrah-Kolkata region, he mobilized a student unity network of over 1000+ Santhal students to advocate for tribal and student welfare. Mandi resigned from the BJSPG on December 7, 2025.
During his tenure with the BJSPG, Mandi led several notable campaigns and demonstrations:
- Academic Program Expansions (September 2023): He played a pivotal role in advocating for the introduction of post-graduate courses in history, philosophy, science, and political science in the Santali language at Sadhu Ramchand Murmu University, Vidyasagar University, and Bankura University, providing higher education alternatives for undergraduate students previously restricted to Bengali or English mediums.
- Santal Freshers Welcome (2023–present): He initiated an annual welcoming program to encourage and support Santhal students pursuing higher studies.
- Scholarship Advocacy (September 2024): He led representations to the Tribal Development Department regarding delays in the Oasis Scholarship, resulting in the government resolving the non-receipt issues for tribal students.
- Cultural Implementations (2024–2025): He led the committee that established the first-ever birth anniversary celebration of Pandit Raghunath Murmu (the creator of the Ol Chiki script) at Rabindra Bharati University in 2024, and organised the inaugural Santal Hul Divas celebrations at University of Calcutta on July 7, 2025.
- Educational Infrastructure Reforms (January 2025): Following disruptions in Santali-medium teaching at the Darpasila Integrated School in Jhargram, Mandi led discussions with Education Department officials at Bikash Bhavan. After issuing a 15-day ultimatum, BJSPG members and student guardians staged a demonstration surrounding the District Inspector (DI) office in Jhargram on January 10, 2025, forcing the department to transfer five teachers to the school and commit to further hiring.
- Deucha Panchami Protests (March 2025): On March 21, 2025, he led a youth protest march from Sealdah to the Y-Channel in Dharmatala against the displacement of tribal communities due to coal mining projects in Deucha Panchami.
- Civil Rights and Anti-Corruption Campaigns (July 2025): On July 25, 2025, Mandi publicly demanded an inquiry commission into allegations of fraudulent Scheduled Tribe (ST) certificates and administrative corruption within the Backward Classes Welfare (BCW) Department of West Bengal. He also organized a deputation and road blockade at the Jadavpur police station to protest the assault and murder of a minor girl in Rampurhat, Birbhum.
