Dr. William Francis Norman O'Loughlin MD (22 October 1849 – 15 April 1912) was an Irish ship's doctor who served as the Chief Surgeon of the RMS Titanic on it's ill-fated maiden voyage. He, along with assistant surgeon J. Edward Simpson, died in the sinking. His body, if found, was never identified.[1][2][3]

Early life and education
O'Loughlin was born in Tralee in County Kerry, Ireland on 22 October 1849; he was the second son of William O'Loughlin and his wife Eliza (née Matthews) and he had an older brother, Edmund Matthew. His parents died when he was young and he was brought up by his uncle Benjamin Matthews, a customs official in County Kerry.[4]
He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin and then at the Catholic University of Ireland (modern-day University College Dublin) at it's medical school. As a young man, due to ill-health, he decided to serve at sea, beginning what was a 40-year long seafaring career.[4]
