Background

Duali India was founded by Nishi Patel, who previously worked in marketing and management roles across several sectors, including Gujarati media outlet Sandesh and real estate. Her interest in ceramics began around seven years before the brand was launched, when she started making handmade birth announcement plates for her daughter. That experience of working with clay grew steadily and eventually led to the creation of Duali as a formal handmade tableware brand.

The name Duali is taken from the word duality. Patel has described the brand's design thinking as being built around the idea that contrasting qualities can coexist naturally, including simplicity and complexity, and traditional and contemporary forms.

Philosophy

The brand is built around the concept of duality, the idea that opposing forces can exist together in harmony. This thinking runs through the entire product range, where contrasting qualities such as tradition and innovation, simplicity and complexity, and the tangible and the intangible are often paired within a single piece.

Rather than manufacturing at scale, Duali focuses on made-to-order production, with many pieces created specifically for individual customers or occasions.

Products

Duali India produces ceramic and fine porcelain tableware across dinnerware, drinkware, and gifting categories. Some items are available as ready-to-ship products while others are made to order following a direct inquiry with the brand.

Dinnerware collections

Wabi Sabi
A collection referencing the Japanese aesthetic concept of wabi-sabi, which finds value in irregularity and impermanence. Pieces in this range carry an intentionally uneven surface finish.
Fire and Smoke
A stackable dinnerware series where each piece is hand-painted with gestural marks representing fire and smoke, creating a contrast between sharp and diffused forms.
Shadows
A collection that, according to the brand, draws on themes of introspection and interior experience. The pieces use restrained tones and understated forms.
Grid and Splash
A collection that contrasts a structured grid pattern with free-flowing organic shapes, pairing order with spontaneity across each piece.

Drinkware collections

Strokes
A cup and saucer set in pure white and deep black porcelain, with hand-applied gold stroke accents.
B and W
A black-and-white cup and saucer set. The saucer includes a small section designed to hold a cookie alongside the cup.
Arch
A mug series combining raw porcelain with a handcrafted handle. The design draws on traditional forms while maintaining a contemporary overall look.
Clay and Sway
A mug collection featuring splashed surface patterns and handmade tassels. Each mug has a bold handle and is designed to function as a decorative object as well as a practical one.

Bespoke and made-to-order

Seamless Sip
A handle-free tea set produced entirely to order. Each set is made only after a customer contacts the Duali team directly.
The Uninvited Guest
A made-to-order collection in which everyday imperfections such as insects and tea stains are used as deliberate hand-painted motifs on each piece.

Duali Pod

The Duali Pod is the brand's primary gifting product. It is packaged in a presentation box designed to function as a display object before being opened. The set contains plates, bowls, and dip dishes. Some versions include hand-painted decoration and 24-carat gold leaf accents. It is sold for occasions including weddings, housewarmings, and festive gifting.

Materials and craftsmanship

Duali India uses fine porcelain as its primary material, chosen for its texture, translucency, and durability. Each piece is shaped, glazed, and finished by hand. The brand does not use mass-production methods. Select pieces include 24-carat gold leaf applied by hand.

The brand considers the handmade process a core part of its identity. Small variations between individual pieces, which would be treated as defects in industrial production, are regarded by the brand as natural characteristics of handmade work.

Sales and distribution

Duali India sells through its own website, duali.co. Customers can also place orders through WhatsApp. Standard collections are available for direct purchase. Bespoke and made-to-order collections require direct contact with the team before production begins. Free shipping is available within India.
