According to the 2001 UK census, Embsay with Eastby parish/ward had a population of 1,758,^[2] increasing to 1,871 at the 2011 Census.^[1]

Until 1974 it was part of the West Riding of Yorkshire.^[3] From 1974 to 2023 it was part of the Craven District, it is now administered by the unitary North Yorkshire Council.
