From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ōtautahi Christchurch monthly meetups are a chance for Wiki people (Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, Wikisource, and so on) to get together, get advice, get collaborations started. Everybody's welcome, beginners or experienced.

  • Scoundrel • 375 St Asaph St, Central Christchurch (map)
  • Sunday, 24 May 2026
  • 10 am–midday

Venue

Exterior of Scoundrel

Scoundrel is a bar and eatery on St Asaph Street. We will have booked a table under the name "Wikipedia".

  • If driving, St Asaph is a one-way street so you need to approach from Fitzgerald Avenue (to the east).
  • If biking, there are fixed bike hoops just down the road outside Space Academy and ordinary "wheel-bender" racks by the front door of Scoundrel.
  • If taking the bus, most of the east<->west routes go nearby including the 3 and the 80. Otherwise the Bus Interchange is a 15 minute walk away.
  • WiFi password is beans375 for Scoundrel Customers

Outcomes and tips

  • I saw a very cute X-frame mini tabletop banner advertising a trust-and-safety clinic while at ESEAP, but can't find anyone in NZ who prints them. I did discover A4 tabletop pull-up banners though, which we could consider getting a couple printed off for Wiki meetups like this; more portable than a perspex stand. —Giantflightlessbirds (talk) 10:19, 23 May 2026 (UTC)
  • There's a new tool for converting and uploading video to Commons directly from your photo library: Clip2Commons. Worked great for me on laptop, but a couple of hiccups from iPhone. —Giantflightlessbirds (talk) 11:29, 23 May 2026 (UTC)
  • Wikipedia:WikiProject New Zealand/Citation Tools: discussion arose from Giantflightlessbirds attending a session by Robert Sim on creating Zotero translators—we should have another go at persuading NZ publishers to whitelist Citoid.
  • Need to do some OpenChch event planning for next year. Taking photos is a great activity for attendees, quite apart from editing Wikipedia articles, and we could run an uploading session after the tours.
  • We need some sort of ultra-easy upload app for iPhones to get more newbies uploading; the mobile interface for Commons is a bit daunting. Maybe even a pamphlet or zine that walks people through it.
  • Some discussion of candidate photos in the upcoming election, and whether Parliamentary Services could help.
  • Currently uploading, indexing and adding locations of photos to Commons on my Commons user page. Nearing completion of Terrace Station Homestead in my sandbox. —ChristchurchHistorian (talk) 02:32, 24 May 2026 (UTC)
