Background

FIPASS extends for 300 metres (980 ft) with six pontoons connected to the the landward side via a steel modular causeway. It was built by the United Kingdom Ministry of Defence in 1984 at an estimated cost of £25 million, and then sold to the Falkland Islands Government in January 1988.[1][2]

Proposed new facility

Contracts covering the new facility were signed by the Falkland Islands Government (FIG) in October 2025.[3] This will entail four new barges covering a length of 400 metres (1,300 ft) and connected to land by a causeway.[4]

Once the new port facility is in operation, the old barges will be disposed of, most likely at sea near to Shag Rock, on Lively Island.[5]
