This Godzilla incarnation spawned another Godzilla specimen, Godzilla Filius, a smaller, nearly identical, cell-divided clone of itself, which acted as the main antagonist of the 2017 film, Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters.
Design
Writing for Comic Book Resources, Jack Gaul and Timothy Blake Donohoo described its appearance as bearing some similarities to past iterations, with some features emphasizing its "primordial nature." They noted that both Godzilla Earth and Godzilla Filius inherit similar physical traits, including "tree-like structures" on their bodies.[2] When the film was announced in June 2017, the filmmakers confirmed that the anime Godzilla would surpass Shin Godzilla in height as the tallest iteration to date.[3] Co-director Hiroyuki Seshita instructed art director Mitsunori Kataama to avoid designing Godzilla as a ferocious reptile, instead fashioning it as a "dignified God." To achieve this, Kataama mostly gave attention to Godzilla's eyes to make them seem more gentle and calm by adding eyelashes and blue colored eyes. Seshita jokingly said they resemble cat eyes.[4]
