Reviewing the original 1966 production the Tribune called it " a serious and deeply-felt play. in which many fundamental guestions are asked."[5]
Writing in 1978 Brian Hoad of The Bulletin called it "A verbose yet meaty piece in three formal acts, now rather old-fashioned, it nonetheless played its part in triggering off the theatrical revolution which was to lead to plays like The Removalists or Keneally’s far more interesting An Awful Rose of 1972."[6]
