Notes

  1. Only appears as an allophone of /n/ at the end of words.
  2. Appears in certain dialects only; corresponds to /ʂ/ in standard Maldivian. Often a voiceless retroflex flap [ɽ̊] or a trill [ɽ͡r̥].[1]
  3. /dˤ, ʕ, ɣ, ħ, x, q, sˤ, ʃ, θ, tˤ, w, ð, ðˤ/ are found exclusive in loanwords from Arabic, and /ʒ/ is found in loanwords from Persian and English. However, they are often substituted with native phonemes.
