Jefferson, Camden County, Georgia

Unincorporated community in Georgia, U.S. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jefferson is an unincorporated community on the Satilla River in Camden County, in the U.S. state of Georgia.[1][2]

History

An old variant name is "Jeffersonton".[1] Jefferson was platted in 1800 and once served as Camden County's county seat.[3] It was chosen as the county seat because the rice planters lived nearby. The county courthouse was a two-story log building with the courtroom on the first floor and a grand jury room on the second floor. The county seat was moved back to St. Marys after while because Jeffersonton was thought to be malarial.[4]
