Born in Nottingham, Shooter played with Yorkshire club Morley RFC and was a regular Yorkshire representative player from 1896 to 1900.[2] He gained four caps as a forward for England across the 1898–99 1899–90 seasons, before moving on to professional rugby with Hunslet in the Northern Rugby Football Union.[3] At Hunslet, Shooter was part of a group of forwards referred to as the "terrible six".[4]
