Louisiana
There are more than 100 named islands in Louisiana. Many of these are barrier islands which are the result of seven delta complexes, created by the changing course of the Mississippi over the last 6,000 years. There are several formation theories and one or more could be relevant to the creation of the islands. Barrier islands are the frontline protection of the coast of Louisiana. The effects of nature and climate-driven hazards, as well as human interference, has endangered many of the islands which may suffer the fate of East Timbalier Island.[1][2]
Note: The five salt domes are known as "The Five Islands".[18]
