Matthias Manasi

Matthias Manasi (born 26 December 1969) is a German conductor and pianist.[1] From 2017 to 2021, he was music director of the Nickel City Opera in Buffalo, New York.[2] He was chief conductor of the Orchestra Camerata Italiana from 2000 to 2013.[3]

Biography
Matthias Manasi studied orchestra conducting at the State University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart with Thomas Ungar and piano with Andrzej Ratusiński and then with Carmen Piazzini at the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe.[4] He participated in conducting masterclasses with Helmuth Rilling, Sylvain Cambreling,[5] Gianluigi Gelmetti, Kurt Masur, and Jorma Panula.[6] He was assistant to Heinz Holliger, Miguel Ángel Gómez Martínez, and Manfred Honeck.[7] His mentors and supporters included Ferdinand Leitner and Karl Österreicher.[7][8]
Musical career
After completing his studies, he worked as conductor (Kapellmeister) at the Opernhaus Kiel and then at the Oldenburgisches Staatstheater.[5] He has conducted at numerous German opera houses, including the Deutsche Oper Berlin,[3] the Staatstheater Kassel,[9] the Leipzig Opera,[10] the Staatstheater Braunschweig,[9] the Theater Bremen, and the Halle Opera House.[2] He has also been a guest conductor at the Silesian State Opera in Opava,[4] the National Theatre in Warsaw,[2] the Grand Theatre in Poznań,[11] the Astana Opera,[12] and the Stadttheater Klagenfurt.[13]
As a guest conductor, Matthias Manasi has worked with the SWR Symphonieorchester,[3] the Munich Radio Orchestra,[9] the Czech Philharmonic,[3] the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra,[3] the National Radio Orchestra of Romania,[14] the Ploiești Philharmonic Orchestra,[15] the Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma,[16] the Orchestra Sinfonica di Sanremo,[17] the Kazakh State Philharmonic Orchestra,[12] the Orquestra Sinfônica do Teatro Nacional Claudio Santoro,[18] the Selangor Symphony Orchestra,[19] the Orquestra Filarmonia das Beiras,[20] as well as the Vienna Mozart Orchestra at the Musikverein in Vienna.[21][22][23]
In 2000, Manasi was appointed chief conductor of the Orchestra Camerata Italiana, with which he conducted the world premiere of Cosimo Minicozzi's oratorio "La Passione di Padre Pio da Pietrelcina"[24] in 2012.[25][26] He remained with the orchestra until 2013.[4][3] From 2007 to 2010, he was conductor of the Erzgebirgische Philharmonie Aue (Eduard-von-Winterstein-Theater).[9][27] From 2010 to 2013, he served as music director of the International Punta Classic Festival in Montevideo.[28] He then served as First conductor at the Wrocław Opera from 2013 to 2016.[3][29] In 2017, he succeeded Michael Ching as music director and chief conductor of the Nickel City Opera in Buffalo, New York.[3] He stepped down from this position in 2021.[2][30] From 2020 to 2024, he was chief conductor of the orchestra "I Solisti di Milano" in Milan.[3][2]
As a conductor and pianist, he has performed with the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra,[28] the Orquestra Sinfônica do Rio Grande do Norte,[31] and the Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra.[32] As a song accompanist, he has performed at the Richard Wagner Museum in Villa Wahnfried in Bayreuth, among other venues.[33]
