MGM Grand Detroit is a AAA Four Diamond/Forbes Four Star luxury casino resort in downtown Detroit, Michigan. The 17-story complex includes a 400-room hotel (with 65 premium suites), a 30,000+ sq ft meeting and convention center, the IMMERSE full-service spa, a steakhouse restaurant (D.PRIME Steakhouse), a sports bar (TAP), and a 147,000 sq ft gaming floor with ~150 table games and ~2,500 slot machines.[2] It is operated by MGM Resorts International (through MGM Grand Detroit, LLC) and the real estate is owned by Vici Properties (via MGM Growth Properties).[3] Since its 1999 opening (temporary casino) and 2007 permanent opening, MGM Grand Detroit has been Detroit’s top-grossing casino (e.g. ~$50.7 M in gaming revenue in Dec 2025).[4] In 2024–26 the resort undertook major renovations – $15 M in 2024 (25th anniversary upgrades) and $20 M announced in 2025 (rooms, spa, casino) – fully completing them by late 2025.[5]

History
MGM Grand Detroit opened a temporary casino on July 29, 1999, as part of Detroit’s effort to establish a legalized casino industry.[6] Construction of the permanent MGM Grand Detroit began in 2005. The project was completed at a cost of approximately $800 million (equivalent to $1,242,176,216 in 2025), and the resort opened on July 3, 2007.[7][8] The property was designed by Hamilton Anderson Associates and SmithGroup and was built as a hotel, casino and entertainment complex in downtown Detroit.[9]
The permanent resort was constructed on approximately 17 acres and included a 400-room hotel, resort spa, restaurants, ballroom, conference facilities and an eight-story parking garage.[3] MGM Resorts International subsequently became the sole owner of the casino operating company.[10]
In 2016, MGM Resorts separated its real-estate assets into MGM Growth Properties.[11] Vici Properties acquired MGM Growth Properties in 2022, making Vici the owner of the real estate associated with MGM Grand Detroit while MGM Resorts continued to operate the resort.[12]
2023 labor strike
In October 2023, employees represented by the Detroit Casino Council went on strike at MGM Grand Detroit and two other Detroit casinos. The strike lasted for 47 days before a new contract was ratified in December 2023.[13]
Hotel
MGM Grand Detroit has 400 guest rooms, including 65 premium suites.[14] The hotel occupies part of the resort’s multi-use complex and is connected to the casino, restaurants, spa and other amenities.[15]
The 2025 renovation project refreshed all of the property’s guest rooms and premium suites with new furniture, mattresses and other furnishings.[16]
Casino
The casino occupies approximately 147,000 square feet and includes nearly 150 table games and thousands of slot and video poker machines.[17][18][19]
The casino includes a poker room and the BetMGM Sports Lounge, which provides sports betting and viewing facilities. The casino floor underwent significant reconfiguration during the 2024 renovation program, including the addition of 233 slot machines and the creation of the LIT Gaming Lounge.[20]
Renovations
MGM Grand Detroit underwent a series of major renovations in 2024 and 2025 as the resort marked its 25th anniversary.[21]
2024 renovations
In 2024, MGM Grand Detroit invested approximately $15 million in improvements to the casino, spa, dining facilities and employee areas.[21]
The casino floor was reorganized to improve sight lines and navigation, while 233 new slot machines were introduced. A new LIT Gaming Lounge was created in a remodeled former nightclub space. The approximately 4,500-square-foot gaming area contains 81 slot machines and 10 table games.[20]
The resort also renovated the Detroit Central Market food hall. National Coney Island and Detroit Wing Company were relocated within the food hall, with expanded self-service areas.[20]
At IMMERSE Spa, the indoor pool area received new tile and refinishing work. Employee facilities were also renovated, including a new 1,784-square-foot employee lounge.[20]
2025 renovations
In May 2025, MGM Grand Detroit announced an additional $20 million investment in renovations to the hotel, casino and spa.[16]
The project included renovations to all 400 hotel rooms. New furnishings, including desks, credenzas and couches, as well as new mattresses and refrigerators, were installed. The property’s 65 premium suites received additional renovations, including new paint, carpeting, window treatments, furniture, mattresses and refrigerators. Interior design work for the premium suites was provided by HVS Design.[22]
The IMMERSE Spa was also upgraded, with new fitness equipment and flooring in the gym and new cabanas in the pool area. Other improvements included a new MGM Rewards desk near the self-parking lobby, new carpeting on the casino floor and upgrades to the casino’s HVAC system.[16]
Ownership and management
MGM Grand Detroit is operated by MGM Resorts International. VICI Properties owns the underlying real estate and leases the property to MGM Resorts.[12]
