Early life and education
Myha'la was born and grew up in San Jose, California.[2] Her mother, Susan (of English, French and German descent) ran a salon. Her father is Jamaican.[3] She graduated from Archbishop Mitty High School in 2014,[2] then attended Carnegie Mellon School of Drama,[4] graduating in 2018.[5]
Career
Myha'la started her career acting primarily in theater roles, including a touring production of The Book of Mormon in 2017, playing Nabulungi.[6] She played a small role in the indie film Premature (2019) and appeared in a 2019 episode of the television series Modern Love.[6] In 2020, she began playing Harper Stern in the financial drama series Industry.[7] In 2023, she starred in the Black Mirror episode "Loch Henry".[8] She began to be known mononymously as Myha'la by 2023.[9][10] Myha'la appeared on the second series of The Celebrity Traitors in October 2026, she became the second contestant to leave the competition after a wink towards fellow player Richard Grant drew suspicion. Following her departure, entrepreneur Chantel Sachanna suggested in a comment on Myha'la's Instagram that racial discrimination had contributed to the decision. Myha'la acknowledged that unconscious bias could have shaped how others interpreted her behaviour, while also recognising that her actions had given the other contestants reasons to suspect her. She rejected the idea that her elimination was solely attributable to racism and defended her fellow players against suggestions of intentional prejudice.[11][12]
Personal life
She met Armando Rivera after he messaged her on Instagram, being a fan of her work on Industry.[13] They married in 2025.[14]
Public discussion of racial bias in game shows
Myha'la's elimination from the second series of The Celebrity Traitors in October 2026[15] prompted discussion about the potential influence of racial bias on the game. After entrepreneur Chantel Sachanna argued on Instagram that Myha'la had been banished because of her race, the actress offered a more nuanced assessment. She suggested that differences in cultural background and expression might lead other contestants to misinterpret her behavior, adding that she had anticipated this possibility before joining the program.[16] Nevertheless, Myha'la considered her own conduct a significant factor in the suspicions against her and disputed the suggestion that her fellow contestants had deliberately targeted her on racial grounds. She also highlighted the value of examining unconscious bias in competitive situations.[17]
