eHealth Exchange is a U.S. health information exchange network that enables electronic sharing of health information among participating organizations. It originated from the federal Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN/NwHIN) initiative and was later operated in the private sector before becoming an independent nonprofit organization in 2018.[1]

In December 2023, eHealth Exchange was designated as a Qualified Health Information Network (QHIN) under the Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement (TEFCA), a nationwide interoperability framework overseen by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC).[3][4]
History
The eHealth Exchange network traces its roots to the Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN/NwHIN), a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services initiative associated with ONC to support interoperable health information exchange.[1]
In 2012, stewardship of the NHIN Exchange was transitioned to a private-sector nonprofit entity (Healtheway, Inc.), which later became known as The Sequoia Project.[1]
In 2018, eHealth Exchange became a separate organization independent from The Sequoia Project.[1][5]
ONC designated eHealth Exchange as one of the initial QHINs when TEFCA became operational in December 2023.[6][7]
