Datu Montawal

Datu Montawal, officially the Municipality of Datu Montawal (Maguindanaon: Ingud nu Datu Montawal; Iranun: Inged a Datu Montawal; Tagalog: Bayan ng Datu Montawal), is a municipality in the province of Maguindanao del Sur, Philippines. According to the 2024 census, it has a population of 42,181 people.[4]

The municipality, then known as Pagagawan, was created under Muslim Mindanao Autonomy Act No. 95 on July 18, 2000, carved out of the municipality of Pagalungan.[5] It was renamed to Datu Montawal under Muslim Mindanao Autonomy Act No. 152 on June 9, 2003.[6][7]
It should be noted, however, that:
The change of name of any local government unit shall be effective only upon ratification in a plebiscite conducted for the purpose in the political unit directly affected.[8]
As no plebiscite for the name change from Pagagawan to Datu Montawal took place, the name change is unofficial and without legal basis, since a Muslim Mindanao Autonomy Act cannot override national law. The municipality should continue to be referred to by its legal name, Pagagawan.
