Overview

A franchise-based hockey league in Pakistan was proposed during the tenure of Pakistan Hockey Federation president Tariq Kirmani in 2005.[1][2][3][4] The six teams represented Pakistan’s provinces and administrative regions. Sindh Qalandars represented Sindh, Shan-e-Punjab represented Punjab, Frontier Falcons represented the North-West Frontier Province, Baloch Lions represented Balochistan, Northern Cavaliers represented the Northern Areas, and Capital Dynamos represented the Islamabad Capital Territory. Individual teams received corporate sponsorship: Sui Southern Gas Company sponsored Sindh Qalandars,[5] MCB Bank sponsored Shan-e-Punjab,[6] and Saudi Pak Commercial Bank sponsored Northern Cavaliers.[7]

There would be 18 matches in all, 15 to be played on single league basis and three classification matches.[8] The tournament featured six teams competing in a single round-robin league stage, with each team playing every other team once. The top two teams advanced to the final, while the third and fourth placed teams contested the bronze medal match and the fifth and sixth placed teams played a fifth-place play-off.[9]

Six teams were named to play in the tournament.[10] Players were selected from different regional and departmental teams of the National Hockey Championship. Six Indian players also participated in the tournament including Dilip Tirkey, Adrian D'Souza, Gagan Ajit Singh, Sandeep Singh, Viren Rasquinha and Arjun Halappa.[8][10][11][12]

Later plans

In February 2016, the Pakistan Hockey Federation initiated preparations for another franchise league by the same name, to be played from October to November 2016.[16][17][18] The league was postponed after the government of Punjab refused to give an NOC to host the event in 2016. In December 2017, it was announced that the PHSL was given an NOC. The inaugural season was slated to begin in April 2018, but was postponed to July 2018 due to the national team's participation in the 2018 Commonwealth Games, and the forthcoming month of Ramadan.[19] It was further pushed back to 12 to 19 January 2019. Around a dozen international players (from Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Belgium, France, and Argentina) were expected to play, with all matches taking place in Lahore.[20] Six were proposed for Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Multan, Peshawar and Quetta.[21][22] However, due to a lack of funds, the tournament was postponed to 15 to 25 March 2019.[23][24] On 11 January 2022, the Pakistan Hockey Federation announced that the inaugural edition of the PHSL would take place in 2022.[25][26] However the league ultimately failed to launch.[4]

In 2026, the Pakistan Hockey Federation announced plans to launch a separate PTCL-sponsored National Hockey League as part of wider reforms.[27][28][29][30][31]
