BCS was first released in 2001 as a browser-based project management application and was subsequently expanded into a broader ERP platform for project-based service organizations.[3][1]

History

BCS was introduced in 2001 by Projektron GmbH, a software company founded in Berlin in the same year.[1] Early descriptions of the product characterized it primarily as web-based project management software for planning, managing and controlling multiple projects simultaneously.[3][4]

Over time, the software was extended with additional modules covering functions beyond project planning, including resource management, time recording, quotation and invoice handling, CRM-related processes and workflow-oriented administration.[1][2][5] By the 2020s, Projektron positioned BCS not only as project management software but also as an ERP platform for professional services and other project-driven organizations.[1][6]

Features

Project management

BCS includes functions for project preparation, planning, execution, controlling and evaluation.[7] These include scheduling, milestone planning, work breakdown structures, target/actual comparison, forecasting and graphical controlling tools.[8]

The software also supports multi-project management and project portfolio management.[4][7] Independent review platforms describe BCS as a comprehensive tool for project planning, resource management, time tracking and the coordination of multiple projects, while also noting a comparatively steep learning curve.[2][5]

Methodological support

According to the vendor, BCS is method-agnostic and can be used with project management standards and frameworks such as IPMA/GPM, PMI, Scrum, PRINCE2, Hermes and Automotive SPICE.[9] The software has also been the subject of academic work specifically examining its relation to PMBOK and PRINCE2.[3][10] Capterra’s product description likewise lists support for IPMA, PMI, PRINCE2, Scrum, Kanban, Hermes and BPMN 2.0.[2]

ERP and administrative functions

Alongside project management features, BCS includes ERP-related functions such as time and effort tracking, quotation and invoicing workflows, resource planning, document-related processes and administrative workflow support.[1][2][6] Review and directory platforms commonly classify the product as a hybrid of project management and ERP software rather than a pure PM tool.[11][2]

Service and collaboration

BCS includes ticketing and collaboration-related functions as part of its broader process support.[7] Review summaries describe it as adaptable for organizations that need to combine project work, resource planning and operational coordination in one system.[5][12]

Technology

BCS is implemented as a browser-based enterprise application written in Java.[1] The product is accessed via a web browser rather than a locally installed desktop client.[2] Projektron offers the software both for in-house deployment and as a hosted service.[1]

Deployment and security

BCS can be deployed either on premises or as a software-as-a-service (SaaS) offering.[1] According to the vendor, hosted installations are operated in Germany.[1] Projektron further states that its hosting and information security processes are aligned with standards and frameworks including ISO/IEC 27001 and TISAX.[13]

Use

BCS is marketed for project-oriented organizations in sectors such as consulting, IT, engineering and the public sector.[14][15][16] An article published by the Smart Country Convention described Projektron BCS in 2025 as web-based project management and ERP software already used in public organizations.[17]

Vendor and review descriptions indicate that the software is intended for both smaller teams and larger organizations with more complex project portfolios, though independent review sources also note that the breadth of functions can make the system comparatively complex to learn and configure.[2][5]
