Plot summary
Shattered Peace
The comic begins with Ravenpaw waking up on the farm with his friend, Barley. He goes about his day, narrating his thoughts about the farm and his life.
At night, the duo hears a scratching noise outside the barn door. They open it to see a group of cats standing there: Willie, Minty, Snapper, Tess and Pounce. Minty, Willie's mate, is about to have kits, so they plead to come in. Ravenpaw welcomes them kindly, and catches prey for them. Soon, the kits are born, and they are named Snowflake, Icicle, Cloudy and Sniff. Ravenpaw becomes very fond of them. The newcomers continue to impose on Ravenpaw and Barley's hospitality, insisting the both of them hunt for them. Barley doesn't like it, but Ravenpaw happily helps them.
One day, Barley catches Snapper teaching the kits death blows. He tells Ravenpaw about it, but Ravenpaw that it's nothing but nonsense, and they need to protect those precious kits. Barley is offput and upset. Later, Barley overhears Willie and Snapper talking about getting their own territory, and is suspicious, but doesn't say a word about it to Ravenpaw.
When Willie's gang is ready to leave, Ravenpaw is very sad and is reluctant to see them go, but Barley is relieved and ushers them out. When Ravenpaw and Barley discuss the cats, Ravenpaw accuses Barley of treating the cats like they were intruders. Barley tells Ravenpaw that since his background was with the Clan, that's why he enjoyed their company so much. He also questions Ravenpaw's belonging in the barn, which shocks and offends Ravenpaw.
Ravenpaw goes to sleep while Barley goes off to hunt, both angry at each other. However, a wire in the barn sparks, and soon enough the whole barn catches fire. Barley wakes Ravenpaw up, and gets him out of the barn. The two cats then choose to help the dogs of the humans who own the farm escape the fire as well.
Ravenpaw and Barley sleep outside of the barn because of how destroyed it was. On a hunting expedition the next day, Barley finds a dead rabbit that neither Ravenpaw nor Barley killed. That night, Ravenpaw and Barley hear noises coming from the chicken coop. The noises turn out to be Willie and his gang. Ravenpaw greets them warmly. But, Willie's cats begin to attack the chickens. Ravenpaw and Barley try to stop them, but the others escape. The farmer, hearing the racket, comes to check on his chickens and sees them dead, with the only cats in sight being Ravenpaw and Barley. The farmer thinks Ravenpaw and Barley killed the chickens, and chases them out. They meet Willie and his gang again, off the farm's property, and find out they were former members of BloodClan, trying to remake their "lost" Clan. Ravenpaw and Barley begin to fight with Willie's gang, but Minty calls for them to stop, saying that enough blood has been shed and that Ravenpaw and Barley should just leave and never return.
That night, the duo sleeps under a bush in the rain, and Ravenpaw apologizes to Barley for not listening to him. The next morning, Ravenpaw sees Highstones from the distance and decides to go there. The two cats spend the night there, and while there, Ravenpaw speaks to StarClan in a dream. Bluestar, Whitestorm and Spottedleaf visit him, and say that they've seen his and Barley's troubles. They tell him to go to Firestar, leader of ThunderClan, and ask for help. Ravenpaw wakes up, and he and Barley leave on their way to ThunderClan.
A Clan in Need
Ravenpaw and Barley wake up in the Moonstone cave. They had previously traveled there after being chased from their home on a farm by a group of former BloodClan cats.
While asleep at the Moonstone, Ravenpaw had received a dream from StarClan. It helped him realize that the cats of ThunderClan, his birth Clan, would help him drive out the BloodClan cats. On their way to ThunderClan, they encounter a patrol of WindClan and ThunderClan cats squabbling over a lost WindClan kit. Ravenpaw and Barley had found the kit on their way, so they returned the kit to WindClan and went with ThunderClan back to their camp. When they reach the camp, Firestar appears. He asks what's brought Barley and Ravenpaw to ThunderClan. They tell him everything, and Firestar agrees to help. However, while they are in the camp, some ThunderClan cats return from a hunting patrol, badly injured. The duo then learns that more BloodClan cats have been attacking ThunderClan patrols, and that Firestar must help ThunderClan before he can send anyone to save the farm. Firestar invites Ravenpaw and Barley to stay for as long as they need.
The next day, Ravenpaw and Barley go on a hunting patrol with ThunderClan. As they return, they are attacked by BloodClan cats. There is a short fight, during which one of the BloodClan cats, Snipe, seems to recognize Barley. BloodClan succeeds in stealing ThunderClan's prey, and retreats. Shortly afterwards, Firestar and Graystripe ask Barley for help finding BloodClan's home in the Twolegplace, so they can take the fight to them. Barley takes offense and runs off into the forest.
The next day, Rainpaw, a ThunderClan apprentice, returns from hunting. He says that he and his sister Sorrelpaw were attacked by BloodClan and that Sorrelpaw is badly hurt. Barley goes with the rescue patrol, and when he sees Sorrelpaw's injuries, he makes up his mind to help ThunderClan. He goes to Firestar to tell him everything he knows, and decides to find his sister, because she might know more. When Barley and Ravenpaw find her, she tells them that BloodClan is getting organized again. Violet leads them to a friend of hers, Mitzi. Mitzi's son, Fritz, was kidnapped by BloodClan one moon before. She followed the cats when they took him and learned where their home was. She gladly takes them there.
The cats return to ThunderClan to tell Firestar where BloodClan lives. He gathers a battle patrol. They slip out of camp and head to the BloodClan camp. When they arrive, they find all of BloodClan assembled below Ice and Snake, Barley and Violet's brothers. Violet walks forward to them. She calls to them, telling them that their names are Jumper and Hoot and that she is their sister. They are unconcerned and pretend not to remember her.
Firestar gives the order to attack. The cats fight, and ThunderClan wins. Ice and Snake plead for mercy. Barley tells them that they've been attacking cats and stealing prey, so now they must pay. Ice and Snake try to avoid punishment by claiming that they never did anything, and that the rest of BloodClan is at fault. With that, BloodClan turns on them and they drive their leaders away. The cats leave, and Firestar promises Ravenpaw that when his Clan has rested, he will lead a patrol to drive the other BloodClan cats from the farm.
The Heart of a Warrior
In the previous book, A Clan in Need, Ravenpaw and Barley ask Firestar, leader of ThunderClan, for help to drive out the rogues that drove Ravenpaw and Barley away from their farm.
After gathering up a patrol of cats willing to help, they leave to go to the farm.
The cats go into the barn to find the place wrecked, and the rogues making a mess. Firestar makes a plan to ambush the rogues in their sleep.
When they carry out their plan, they are given away when the chickens are startled and make a lot of noise. The rogues are alarmed, and fight the Clan cats.
There turns out to be a far larger amount of rogues than the Clan cats originally anticipated, some of whom are BloodClan refugees. During the battle in the barn, the farmer hears the cats and goes in, scaring all the cats off.
ThunderClan regroups, and Firestar comes up with another plan to defeat the rogues. The plan works, and ThunderClan drives the rogues out of the barn, but right at the turning point of the battle, reinforcements for the rogues show up.
The Clan cats begin to lose the fight, but the dogs of the farm get loose and attack the rogues. They finally drive out the rogues with the help of the dogs, leaving only Barley's brothers, Hoot and Jumper.
Firestar and the Clan cats then depart, and Ravenpaw and Barley go into the barn.
They decide to let Hoot and Jumper stay in the barn with them. While Barley goes out on a walk, Ravenpaw shows Hoot and Jumper around the farm. Ravenpaw notices that Hoot and Jumper don't care about it.
When Ravenpaw and the visitors return to the barn, Ravenpaw takes a nap. When Barley wakes him up, he finds the barn wrecked.
Hoot and Jumper claim that they were trying to hunt for mice, and accidentally destroyed it. One night Barley and his brothers go out for a walk. When they return, Hoot and Jumper order Ravenpaw to hunt for them.
The next day, they still are ordering Ravenpaw around. Ravenpaw wonders why Barley isn't doing anything about it.
However, as if on cue, Barley gets angry at Hoot and Jumper, saying that he doesn't like how they are treating Ravenpaw, and claims that loyalty is everything, not blood. Hoot and Jumper leave the barn for good, and Ravenpaw and Barley finally have their home again.

Critical reception
Joanna K. Fabicon, writing for School Library Journal on A Clan in Need, noted that "sharply drawn feral and ferocious expressions heighten tension whenever there is a standoff" and praised the book for allowing unfamiliar readers to "easily become immersed in the story", while also noting that the original drawings were black-and-white, lacking in color compared to the "gloriously described cat fur".[4]
Writing for Children's Literature, Kathie M. Josephs praised Shattered Peace for accommodating new readers of the series.[5]
